Os voy a explicar hoy la diferencia entre estas tres palabras: after, then y afterwards. Mis alumnos suelen tener muchos problemas con after y then, ya
que los usan indistintamente, lo cual no es posible. Bien, vamos allá.
1. AFTER
After puede ser preposition y conjunction.
– Como preposition, va seguida de un sustantivo y se traduce por ‘después de’. Ejemplos:
* I do my homework after lunch = hago los deberes después de la comida. Hay que destacar que en español, más que decir, después de la comida,
diríamos después de comer, pero en inglés, ‘lunch’ es sustantivo, no verbo, por tanto, se cumple la regla de after + sustantivo. Cómo se traduzca no es tan
importante como el uso, que recordar es after + sustantivo.

* I’ll call you after class = te llamo después de clase = otra vez tenemos la regla de after + sustantivo (class).
– Como conjunction, va seguida de una oración, con sujeto y verbo. Ejemplos:
* You can play fooball after you’ve done your homework = puedes jugar al fútbol después de que hayas comido.
En este caso tenemos la regla de decíamos: after + subject (you) + verb (‘ve done).
* I have breakfast after I have a shower = desayuno después de ducharme = after + subject (I) + verb (have).
Por tanto, como yo le digo a mis alumnos, after se traduce por DESPUÉS DE, no por después.
2. THEN
– Then es un adverbio y se traduce por después, luego o entonces.
– Siempre va seguido de Sujeto y Verbo y implica una correlación de hechos, por ejemplo: he went to the butcher’s and then he went to the baker’s = él
fue a la carnicería y después/luego él fue a la panadería.
Si quisiéramos utilizar aquí after, que recordad, se traduce por ‘después de’, podríamos decir: He went to the butcher’s and after that, he went to the
baker’s = se puede poner detrás de after, that. Otro ejemplo: he went to the butcher¡s and then he went to the baker’s and after he went to the baker’s,
he had a coffee with some friends.
3. AFTERWARDS
Es un adverbio y se puede utilizar como sinónimo de then, por tanto, se traduce por después, luego, más tarde. Ejemplos: He went to the butcher’s and the
baker’s and afterwards, he he had a coffee with some friends.
