An Action Plan
• In 2012, the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism
designed an Action Plan (PAE El Hierro 2012) with specific measures
to promote economic growth in El Hierro.
• The main objective of this Action Plan was to counteract the negative
effects of the volcanic eruption of October 2011 in the economy of the
island.
• Some the initiatives in this Action Plan were entrusted to SEGITTUR.

A support plan for entrepreneurs.
Implementation of a Free Access WiFi Network.
The design and provision of a Volcanogical Visitor Centre on the
island.
• Preparation and endorsement of the candidacy of El Hierro to enter
the European Geoparks Network.
Smart Tourist Destination
• SEGITTUR is developing the Smart Tourist Destination project that
involves the implementation of SMART strategies in tourist territories.
• El Hierro Island is one of the Spanish destinations originally selected
to develop pilot projects as Smart Tourist Destinations.
• The implementation of the Free Access WiFi Network is one of the
main projects in leading El Hierro into becoming a Smart Tourist
Destination.
Free Access WiFi Network
• The network is formed by a total of 27 WiFi hot spots distributed
throughout the island. It includes touristic sites as well as public
spaces in urban areas.
• The network allows the user free access to all Internet contents (email, web sites, social networks). But it also allows access to mobile
applications.
• The network has also improved the safety conditions because it
allows connectivity in areas where there is no mobile phone coverage.
• All the equipment installed has been camouflaged to minimize its
visual impact.

The users data traffic is guided from all the WiFi hot spots towards the Network’s Control
Center in Valverde where it exits to the internet.

•The network’s architecture is designed in three different levels:
•
WiFi access network: 27 WiFi hot spots that offer connectivity to the final user.
•
WiMAX transport network: The data from all the WiFi hot spots is concentrated in several WiMax
equipments that run through the Island as the network’s back bone.
•
Network’s Control Center and Data Center. Located in the Emergency Coordination Center of Valverde
with a 24/7 availability.

Free Access WiFi Network: Smart services
• The WiFi / WiMax network has been designed
with excess capacity in order to support other
smart services that require connectivity:
• Video surveillance services: Already
projected in the Parador tunnel.
• Remote measuring: use of sensors in
fresh water tanks and waste containers in
remote locations.
• IP telephones to interconnect isolated
locations with Valverde: Already projected
for the Garoé Visitors Center.
•Thermo graphic cameras for fire
prevention.
