Nada para nosotras sin nosotras
A
message out of a bottle.
A bunch of balloons in
the air. A song. A step,
another step: this is the road we
have walked together. We are ICW
Global: an International Community
of Women living with aids. And we
show ourselves, because we enjoy
showing our smile.
We started as a group of 30 people.
We met in London in 1991, when it
was not very clear what HIV meant,
when fear seemed to win all battles.
But that encounter filled up our lives.
With hope.
Today, we are more than 15
thousand women, from 120 countries
in five continents. On September
last year, we started this new Period
led by Patricia Perez: the first Latin
American woman selected to lead
the destiny of ICW for three years.
And we moved forward knowing that
mistakes from the past represent big
lessons that teach us that convictions
are always constructive.
We believe it is necessary to make
ourselves be heard, defend our rights,
share what we know, gather further
information and participate on spaces
where public policies are discussed
and where the decisions that change
our lives are taken. We want nothing
for us without us.
This magazine is like taking a
breather. It represents another way
of breaking frontiers, jungles and tides
just to feel close to one another. This is
a space to share those Little things we
fight for every day, as well as our big
achievements.
This is also a place from which we
insist on living in a world with more peace,
less AIDS. Women are victims of domestic
violence and, as current ICW Chair said:
“they cannot demand their partners to use
a condom, they suffer great difficulties in
trying to access medication and they see
no perspective on how their human rights
could be assured “.
From the former 30 founders, there
are only five of them who are still alive:
Patricia is one of them. Somehow, they are
all involved in the essence of this fight. You
will be able to hear our voices and discover
a hug for you in each one of these pages:
we are stronger if we are together.
A kiss... to Flora Kimbato, we will miss
you, my friend! She lived in Tanzania,
was 32 years old and even though she
passed away very recently, she will
always be here with us. She will be just
like the wind, giving us the drive.

n mensaje que sale de
la botella. Un racimo
de globos que vuela.
Una canción. Un paso, otro paso: el
camino que hicimos juntas. Somos
la ICW Global: una Comunidad
Internacional de Mujeres viviendo
con sida. Y damos la cara, porque nos
gusta mostrar la sonrisa.
Empezamos siendo treinta. Nos
conocimos en Londres, en 1991, cuando
ni siquiera nos quedaba en claro qué era
el VIH, cuando el miedo parecía ganar
todas las batallas. Pero ese encuentro
nos llenó de vida. De esperanzas.
Hoy somos más de 15 mil
mujeres, de 120 países de los cinco
continentes. En septiembre del año
pasado empezamos esta Nueva Era de
la mano de Patricia Pérez: la primera
latinoamericana elegida para conducir
por tres años los destinos de la ICW.
Y avanzamos con la certeza de que
los errores del pasado dejan lecciones,
de que las convicciones son siempre
las que movilizan y construyen.
Creemos que es necesario
hacernos oír, defender nuestros
derechos, compartir lo que sabemos,
ir por más información y participar
en los espacios donde se debaten
las políticas públicas y se toman las
decisiones que influyen en nuestras
vidas. Ya no queremos nada para
nosotras sin nosotras.
Esta revista es un suspiro o un
respiro. Otro modo de saltar fronteras,
selvas y mareas para sentirnos cerca.
Un espacio para compartir las pequeñas
cosas por las que peleamos a diario y
las grandes conquistas que logramos.
Es el lugar desde donde también insistimos
por un mundo con más paz, menos sida.
Porque una mujer que es víctima de la
violencia familiar, como dijo la actual
Presidenta de la ICW: “no puede exigir
el uso del preservativo a su pareja, sufre
graves dificultades para acceder a tomar
sus medicamentos, y no tiene perspectiva
de asegurar sus derechos humanos”.
De aquellas 30 fundadoras hoy sólo
quedan con vida cinco: Patricia es una
de ellas. Pero de algún modo todas están
presentes en la esencia de esta lucha. Y
en esta revista podrán escuchar nuestras
voces y descubrir que en cada página hay
un abrazo para ustedes: porque juntos
somos más fuertes.

Continue defending our rights on a national, regional
and international level in the same way we’ve done so
far. Empowering women. Creating commitments so
governments create public policies that will help us.

hemos venido haciéndolo. Darles poder a las mujeres.

We work today just to make sure ICW gets back
on track. This meeting in Vienna will help us get a
clearer view on the organizational direction we need.
Y hoy trabajamos para asegurarnos de que la ICW
vuelva a su rumbo. Este encuentro en Viena nos ayudará
a establecer una dirección clara de la organización.
Our voices are important to women and girls. That is
why we make them be heard as an attempt to improve
the quality of life of many people around the world.

It is amazing for me to hear about ICW
Chapters mobilizing in Nigeria, Jamaica, in
the Middle East and North Africa. People
sometimes don’t understand how much
being part of a network can improve health.
Es apasionante para mí escuchar sobre los
capítulos de ICW movilizándose en Nigeria,
Jamaica, en Medio Oriente y en África del
Norte. La gente a veces no entiende hasta qué
punto el pertenecer a una red puede mejorar la
salud de manera inconmensurable.
Each one of us will continue to give the best
of ourselves for this cause.
Cada una de nosotras continuará dando lo
mejor de sí en pos de nuestra causa.
There are other challenges: every organization
working on the issue of HIV must be able
to integrate PLHA in their staff, give them
relevant roles; and they must also be able to
include programs with positive networks in
charge. This industry has a long way to run in
regards to this subject. We cannot allow this
fight against stigmatization and discrimination
to come to a standstill. It is becoming
more and more common to live with HIV
anonymously. Openness and acceptance of our
disease are very powerful weapons.
Hay otros desafíos: todas aquellas
organizaciones que trabajen en VIH deben
integrar a las PVVS a su staff, en puestos
de liderazgo; y asociarse a programas con
redes positivas al mando. La industria tiene
un largo camino por recorrer en relación a
este tema. Además no debemos dejar que se
estanque la lucha contra la estigmatización
y la discriminación. Cada vez es más común
vivir con VIH anónimamente. La apertura y
la aceptación de nuestra enfermedad son las
armas más poderosas.

for women in Mozambique

Decimos basta a la esterilización forzada
Safe sex. The only thing to fear is ignorance.
Sexo seguro. Miedo hay que tenerle sólo a la ignorancia.
Our friend Jennifer Gatsi-Mallet will be participating of a speech
on “Forced Sterilization”. When ICW travelled to Namibia in
2008 to talk about sterilization, 40 women came to us and told us
they had been forced to be sterilized as they were HIV positive.
Since then, many others have reported this situation.
Jennifer, representing ICW, and the Namibia National Women’s
Health Network (NWHN) initiated a judicial complaint for these
cases.
Defend ourselves. The complaint is in progress. We have
multiple strategies. ICW and NWHN have contacted the
press and have been involved with activists from Namibia,
both regionally and internationally, to spread knowledge on
this subject. Some of the cases have been taken by the Legal
Assistance Center.
In April, the Human Rights Program from the Harvard
University Law School joined the cause to document abuses
perpetrated against the rights of HIV positive women. They
will issue a document that will discuss the issue of stigma and
discrimination faced by these women in their search for sexual
or reproductive assistance in Namibia.
Nuestra compañera Jennifer Gatsi-Mallet participará de una
ponencia acerca de “Esterilización forzada”. Cuando en
2008 ICW viajó al país africano de Nambia para hablar sobre
esterilización, 40 mujeres se acercaron y contaron que habían
sido esterilizadas de manera forzada y coercitiva debido a su
condición de VIH positivas. Desde entonces, muchas más
mujeres han reportando el mismo hecho.
Jennifer, en representación de ICW, y la Red de Salud de
Mujeres de Namibia (NWHN) iniciaron una demanda judicial
por estos casos.
Defendernos. La demanda sigue su curso. La estrategia es
múltiple. ICW y NWHN se han contactado con la prensa y se
han vinculado con activistas de Namibia, tanto en forma regional
como internacional, para expandir el conocimiento acerca de este
tema. Algunos casos se han llevado al Centro de Asistencia Legal.

I
n Mozambique patriarchism and
preconceptions still lead the way.
This is why women, besides fighting
against HIV, also fight against the
feminization of the virus.
Many of them marry at a very young
age. They see marriage as an alternative
to get economic independence, a way to
feel free or a way of survival. This is why
they are later on abandoned after they are
infected and their husbands don’t offer them
or their children, any kind of assistance.
In this African country, the HIV
test is mandatory. Usually, women know
about their situation before their husbands
do. Sometimes, they are thrown out of
their homes and the story can even end in
tragedy. They are forced to return to the
home of their parents with their children
in tow. Then, they will do anything just
to support their children. The possibilities
of infection are now doubled. Some of
them continue to spread the virus due to
ignorance, for fear of losing their partner or
for not practicing safe sex.
Yes, reality is tough, but there are many
women in Mozambique fighting for this to
change. They want to get information about
their sexual and reproductive rights. They
now understand safe sex is a necessity.

n Mozambique todavía reina la ley
del machismo y del preconcepto.
Por eso las mujeres, además de luchar
contra el mismo HIV, se arremangan y
pelean contra la feminización del virus.
Muchas suelen casarse muy temprano.
Ven al matrimonio como la alternativa
para independizarse económicamente,
de sentirse más libres o como una forma
de supervivencia. Pero son abandonadas
después de contraer el virus y sus parejas
no les prestan, ni a ellas ni a sus hijos,
ninguna asistencia.
En este país africano el test de HIV
es obligatorio. Y por lo general las mujeres
conocen su estado antes que sus maridos.
A veces, son echadas de la casa o la historia
hasta puede terminar en tragedia. Se ven
obligadas a volver a la casa de los padres
con los hijos a cuestas.
Entonces serán capaces de hacer
de todo por mantener a los niños. Las
posibilidades de reinfectarse se multiplican.
Algunas continúan propagando el virus
por ignorancia, por miedo de perder a su
compañero o por no cuidarse.
Sí, la realidad es dura, pero ya son
muchas las mozambiqueñas que luchan
para que cambie. Que desean informarse
acerca de sus derechos sexuales y
reproductivos. Que entienden que es
necesario el sexo seguro.

challenge of building together a world
where peace is stronger than AIDS.
It brings great joy and hope to
know that she-one of the 7 women
president in the world- is the
Godmother of our organization.

de Costa Rica: Laura Chinchilla,
se comprometió un poco más con
nuestra lucha diaria de enfrentar el
VIH y con el desafío de construir
juntas un mundo donde la paz sea
más fuerte que el sida.
Hoy es una gran alegría y nos trae
muchas esperanzas saber que ella
-una de las siete mujeres presidentes
que hay en el mundo- es la Madrina
de nuestra organización.

Women of the regional secretariat in this country met with the
First Lady Vanda Pignato. During the visit, they could tell her
about the activities carried out, future projects and they also
suggested she should join the + Peace – AIDS campaign. She
was also invited to collaborate with the San Salvador Chapter.
She said yes. Showing interest, the First Lady committed herself
to guide the different ministries of her government towards a
wider participation of ICW women and supporting their actions.
One of her recommendations was the creation in the organization
of a Coalition of Presidents and Women Leaders in a wider
political level and with the direct support of governments.
Las mujeres del secretariado regional de este país se reunieron
con la Primera Dama Vanda Pignato. Durante la visita pudieron
contarle acerca de las actividades realizadas, los proyectos a
futuro, y le propusieron a unirse a la Campaña + Paz – Sida.
Además la invitaron a colaborar con el Capítulo salvadoreño.
Dijo que sí. Con mucho interés, la Primera Dama se comprometió
a orientar a los distintos ministerios de su gobierno para abrir
la participación de las mujeres de ICW y apoyar sus acciones.
Una de sus recomendaciones fue crear en la organización una
Coalición de Presidentes y Mujeres Líderes, con un mayor nivel
político y el respaldo directo de los gobiernos.
Yes, this new Chapter was created in
April with members that belong to the ten
provinces of the country. The regional chair,
Vimbayi Zisengwe, said they will have to
work hard to: ensure the greater involvement
of women living with HIV, share information
and make plans for the future.
Rebirth. “ICW Global and its regions, including
South Africa, has been the representation of a
massive restructuring process for the last 18
months”, says Martha Tholanah, activist in the
new organization. When she assures the release
of this new chapter is a very positive thing, no
one doubts it.
In progress. “When ICW was created in
1992, members were related to each other
individually, through the international
support office in London. As communication
techniques were developed, we found there
was a great number of ICW members in
Zimbabwe”, says Martha. This is why they
were now able to create a formal structure to
support the development of its membership.

provincias de todo el país. La presidenta

deberán trabajar duro para: asegurar la mayor

meses”, dice Martha Tholanah, activista de la
nueva organización. Por eso cuando asegura
que el lanzamiento de este capítulo es un
hecho positivo, nadie lo duda.
En marcha. “Cuando ICW fue
formada en 1992, los miembros se vinculaban
individualmente, a través de la oficina de
apoyo internacional que tenía su sede en
Londres. A medida que las técnicas de
comunicación crecieron, se captó un gran
número de miembros de ICW en Zimbabwe”,
dice Martha. Por eso hoy en día pudieron
crear una estructura formal para apoyar el
crecimiento de la membresía.

Caribbean, together with Chair Patricia Perez,
introduced the More Peace, Less AIDS campaign
and talked about the situation in regards to the Human Rights
of women, children and adolescents in the world with Jeffery
Crowley, director of the Office of National AIDS Policy, who
undertook to transmit concepts to President Obama.

Chair Patricia Pérez, presentaron la campaña Mas Paz Menos
SIDA y hablaron de la situación de los DD HH de las mujeres,
niñas y adolescentes del mundo, con Jeffery Crowley, Director
de la Política de SIDA de la Casa Blanca, quien se comprometió
a transmitir los conceptos al Presidente Obama.

Little things that
make us feel well
Pequeñas cosas
que nos hacen sentir bien
/ Waking up wanting to start a new day.
Recognizing ourselves in the shadow
created by the sun. Laughing loudly.
Loving each other. This is quality of life.
// Despertar con ganas de empezar un
nuevo día. Reconocernos en la sombra
que devuelve el sol. Reír a carcajadas.
Querernos. Eso es la calidad de vida.
There is no doubt about the fact that what is important about
each person is that which cannot be seen, but it is also
very healthy to feel good about oneself. It helps self-esteem. And
it also allows our social or sexual life to continue uninterrupted.
Feeling good is the sum of a lot of little things.
Sin dudas lo que importa de cada persona es justo eso
que no se ve, pero también es muy saludable estar a gusto
con una misma. Ayuda a la autoestima. Y permite que no se
interrumpa la vida social, ni sexual. Sentirse bien es la suma de
un montón de pequeñas cosas.
First: feed ourselves.
Primero: alimentarnos.
There is no need to say that pills won’t be of much help unless we
eat properly. Treatments and good nutrition always go together.
Eating healthy provides the necessary energy and nutrients; it
benefits our defense system and cardiac activity, strengthens
our bones, reaffirms muscles and makes us feel strong.
We know the virus makes us lose weight. We need to face
liposdystrophy: that alteration that makes us lose fat in arms,
legs or the face; or, on the contrary, makes us gain weight on the
belly, for example. Yes: our body changes. We need to take care
of it more than ever.
Physical activity becomes really important, and we
are not even talking about going to the gym! a good walk is
sometimes enough to cheer us up and strengthen our muscles.
Getting dolled up helps, too. Only by showing a smile we
take a big step. Then we can get a little make up on, change our
hair cut or put on a new dress.
This will become a space for making us beautiful
on the inside and out... We are many and live in different
countries with different customs and cultures.
Here, we can talk about our ways of life, regional food that is
healthy, maybe exchange recipes. Dr. Cormillot, nutritionist
and ICW Global consultant will be joining this space. He will
provide answers for our questions and will give us good advice.
We will also be able to share fashion trends in our countries. Or
how we each manage to look radiant.
Together, we will have a great time.
No hace falta aclarar que las pastillas que debemos tomar, no
ayudarán mucho si no podemos comer bien. Los tratamientos
siempre van de la mano con la buena nutrición.
Comer sano asegura la energía y los nutrientes necesarios,
beneficia el sistema de defensas y la actividad cardiaca, fortalece
los huesos, reafirma los músculos y nos hace sentir fuertes.
Sabemos que el virus hace perder peso. Y que hay que enfrentar
la lipodistrofia: esa alteración que hace que se pierdan grasas
en brazos, piernas o en la cara; o por el contrario, que aumente
mucho en el vientre, por ejemplo. Sí: el cuerpo cambia. Hay que
cuidarlo más que nunca.
La actividad física es muy importante,
¡y ni siquiera hablamos de ir al gimnasio!, una buena caminata a
veces es suficiente para renovar el ánimo y fortalecer los músculos.
Ponerse linda también ayuda.
Con mostrar la sonrisa ya damos un gran paso. Después
podemos maquillarnos un poco, cambiar el corte de pelo o lucir
un vestido nuevo.
Este espacio será un rincón para embellecernos por
dentro y por fuera. Somos muchas y vivimos en lugares con
costumbres y culturas diferentes. Aquí podremos contar acerca
de nuestras formas de vida, las comidas típicas que hacen bien,
pasarnos quizá una receta. También nos va a estar acompañando
el Dr. Cormillot, médico nutricionista y asesor de ICW Global.
El responderá nuestras dudas y nos dará buenos consejos.
Podremos además compartir las tendencias en moda de nuestros
países. O cómo se las ingenia cada una para verse radiante.
Juntas la pasaremos mucho mejor.

Plantar flores para verlas crecer

I found out I was HIV positive in 1994. Three years after
that, I became a widow. It took me quite a lot to break
silence and make my situation public. Not only was I living with
the pain of loss, but I was also living with the stigma of being a
woman whose husband died from AIDS.
At the beginning I didn’t know how to tell members of my
family, my work mates, or boss... I work for the Postal Bank in
Tanzania. Little by little, I was able to face the problem, take it
in and learn to live with it.
Since then, I’ve attended several meetings, workshops, seminars
and conferences. I have learned what it is like to live as a
positive woman and that silence and denial only promote the
spread of the virus.
Even though there is no cure, prevention can be really effective.
It is hard to talk about sexual behavior and personal risks, but I
try to follow a treatment by having checks, I treat any infections
immediately, I have a balanced diet, I rest whenever I need it and,
above all, I do this because I plant flowers and watch them grow.

Supe que era VIH positiva en 1994. Tres años después
enviudé. Me llevó mucho tiempo romper el silencio y hacer
público mi caso. No sólo vivía con la pérdida, sino que además
con la marca de ser una mujer cuyo marido murió de sida.
Al principio no sabía cómo decirles a los miembros de mi
familia, a los compañeros de oficina, a mi jefe... soy empleada
del Banco Postal de Tanzania. De a poco fui capaz de enfrentar
el problema, internalizarlo y aprender a vivir con él.
Desde entonces asisto a diversos encuentros, talleres, seminarios
y conferencias. Aprendí cómo es vivir con positivo y que el
silencio y la negación promueven la expansión del virus.
Auque no existe una cura, la prevención es realmente efectiva.
Es difícil hablar sobre conducta sexual y riesgos personales,
pero yo tengo buena adherencia al tratamiento porque me hago
chequeos, trato las infecciones de manera inmediata, sigo una
dieta balanceada, descanso cuando lo necesito y sobre todo
porque planto flores y las veo crecer.
We need to know that sitting and crying over will not resolve the
problem. We need to wake up and fight for our rights and the rights
of our children. Let’s not forget about widowhood and inheritance.
Debemos saber que sentarse a llorar no resuelve los
problemas. Hay que despertar y pelear por nuestros derechos
y los de nuestros hijos. Y no olvidar el tema de la viudez, la
herencia y las sucesiones.
We have great responsibility in our fight against this pandemic.
We are not victims, but people living with HIV/AIDS. Today my
plan is to live.”
Nosotras tenemos una gran responsabilidad en la lucha contra
la pandemia. No somos víctimas, sino gente que vive con VIH/
Sida. Hoy mi plan es vivir.”
