• Read the following sentences, paying close attention to the boldfaced words.
Ellos tocaron la guitarra ayer.
(They played the guitar yesterday.)
Yo jugué al béisbol.
(I played baseball.)
Ella jugó al béisbol.
(She played baseball.)
Yo almorcé en casa.
(I ate at home.)
Vosotros almorzasteis en casa.
(You all ate at home.)

EXPLANATION: Regular verbs that end in -car, -gar, and -zar have a spelling change
in the yo form of the preterite. The change allows the words to maintain their original
sound. Study the conjugation of tocar, pagar, and comenzar. Use the chart as a
quick reference for the preterite tense of these verbs.
