VOWELS (LAS VOCALES) The great thing about the Spanish language is that the vowels always sound the same! NO MATTER WHAT! The pronunciation of the vowels are as follows: A /ah/ ejemplo: cama, calmar, casa E /eh/ ejemplo: tren, mes, entre I /eeh/ ejemplo: si, mil, ingrid O /oh/ ejemplo: oso, oro, gol U /ooh/ ejemplo: tu, azul, Perú STRONG VOWELS A, E, & O, are strong vowels. This means that if the two vowels are next to each other in a word then you would pronounce the vowels separately. Ejemplo: aeropuerto (airport) would be pronounced: a-e-ro-puer-to traer (to bring) would be pronounced: tra-er tarea (homework) would be pronounced: ta-re-a oeste (west) would be pronounced: o-e-ste WEAK VOWELS I, U, these two vowels do not need to be pronounced separately, they can be combined together to make a continuous sound. Ejemplo: ciudad (city) would be pronounced ciu-dad cuidado (careful) would be pronounced cui-da-do
