They can easily get caught up with what they’re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What’s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t buy clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that “Your heavenly Father knows” all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Él no dice: “No coman. No cocinen. No se compren ropa”. Más bien dice: “No se preocupen”. Jesús no nos pide que renunciemos a nuestras responsabilidades sino que abandonemos nuestra ansiedad. La ansiedad revela una falta de confianza y Jesús nos recuerda que “su Padre celestial ya sabe” todo lo que necesitamos (Mateo 6:32). READINGS FOR THE WEEK/LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA “...Jesus stood up and exclaimed, “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: ‘Rivers of living water will flow from within him ’.” (John: 7:37, 38). “...Jesús, puesto en pie, exclamó con voz potente: “El que tenga sed, que venga a mí. Pues el que cree en mí tendrá de beber. Lo dice la Escritura: De su seno brotarán ríos de agua viva.” (Juan 7:37, 38) Monday/Lunes: Sir 17:20-24; Mk/Mc 10:17-27 Tuesday/Martes: Sir 35:1-12; Mk/Mc 10:28-31 Wednesday/Miércoles: Sir 36:1, 4-5a, 10-17; Mk/Mc 10:32-45 Thursday/Jueves: Sir 42:15-25; Mk/Mc 10:46-52 Friday/Viernes: Sir 44:1, 9-13; Mk/Mc 11:11-26 Saturday/Sábado: Sir 51:12c-20; Mk/Mc 11:27-33 Sunday/Domingo: Dt 11:18, 26-28, 32; Ps/Sal 31; Rom 3:21-25, 28; Mt 7:21-27 February 27, 2011 — Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 PARISH NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY A long-time faithful parishioner, Phyllis Cionni, born on April 18, 1918, passed away on February 19, 2011. For Abby Johnson, a one-time director of a Planned Parenthood facility, it was the presence of a loving pro-life prayer group who prayed the Rosary every day her facility performed abortions. You can read about her conversion story in her new book, “unplanned.” She writes that many who are involved in volunteering at Planned Parenthood believe they are helping women in need. But we know that every woman “helped” by an abortion may experience a temporary reprieve but will eventually realize she suffers a profound sorrow from the loss of her child. Hearts will be changed one person at a time. February is the month to celebrate Love. Share God’s love with a woman who is pregnant, whether joyful or scared, or who has lost her baby through abortion or miscarriage. See the SFR Pro-Life Bulletin board for resources. Pro-Life Suggestion #10 – Be able to defend, in love, your pro-life position. Focus your discussion on the morality of taking a human life for any reason – “choice” and “privacy” miss the point entirely. Science is clear that human life begins at conception. Challenge the thinking that the unborn child’s dependency makes its life less valuable. Pray for wisdom.
