THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION The Soviet Union sent the first space station into orbit in 1971. It was called Salyut 1. The first crew sent to visit the station couldn’t get inside because the hatch wouldn’t work. The next crew got in and stayed for 24 days. However, a valve in their capsule broke as they were returning to Earth. The air escaped, and all the members of the crew died. The Russians launched a second space station in 1973. This station had problems while it was in orbit, and no one ever lived on it. During this time, the United States launched its first space station. It was called Skylab. The first crew stayed in space for 28 days. The last Skylab crew stayed for 84 days. Skylab was no longer used after 1974. The Russians and Americans learned many things from their space stations. For example, after a long stay, astronauts were so weak when they returned to Earth that they couldn’t stand up. As a result, exercise equipment was put on space stations. In 1986 the Soviets launched another space station. This space station was called Mir, which means “peace” in Russian. Mir was different from other space stations. It was designed so that parts could be added on to it. Rockets could dock with the station to bring more supplies and fuel. In 1995 an American astronaut visited Mir and lived there for three months. The record for the longest time in space was set on Mir too – 438 days. In 1998 the first section of the new International Space Station was sent into orbit. In November of 2000, a crew arrived at their new home over 200 miles above the earth to start a new chapter in space station history.
