Dear Family,
Geometric shapes and figures are found all around us. Your child is
building a spatial understanding of how congruent shapes (figures that
have the same size and shape) can be moved in different ways. Shown
below are the movements your child is studying.

You child is also finding lines of symmetry within figures and drawing
symmetric figures using dot paper. The following activities will help support
your child’s understanding of congruence and symmetry.
Hide and Go Flip
Materials Household shapes or items with flat surfaces such as
refrigerator magnets, napkins, coins, or pieces of gum
Step 1 Have Player 1 place an item on the table and then close
his or her eyes.
Step 2 Player 2 moves the item using one or more of the motions
pictured above.
Step 3 Player 1 opens his or her eyes and guesses which
motion was used.

Materials Masking tape or string
Have your child find symmetric objects in the house or yard such
as a garbage can, sofa, or blanket. Using masking tape, have
him or her mark all the lines of symmetry. Remember that many
shapes have more than one line of symmetry.

Su hijo/a también está hallando ejes de simetría dentro de las figuras y está
dibujando figuras simétricas usando papel punteado. Las siguientes actividades
serán de ayuda para que su hijo/a entienda la congruencia y la simetría.
¿Cómo lo moví?
Materiales figuras o artículos caseros con superficies planas como imanes
para refrigerador, servilletas, monedas o chicles.
Paso 1 El jugador 1 pone un artículo en la mesa y luego cierra los ojos.
Paso 2 El jugador 2 mueve el artículo usando uno o más de los movimientos
descritos arriba.
Paso 3 El jugador 1 abre los ojos y dice qué movimiento(s) se usó(aron).
La casa de la simetría
Materiales Cinta adhesiva de papel o cuerda
Pídale a su hijo/a que halle objetos simétricos en la casa o el jardín como el
cubo de la basura, el sofá, o una cobija. Pídale que marque todos los ejes de
simetría usando cinta adhesiva de papel. Recuerde que muchas figuras tienen
más de un eje de simetría.
