From the Pastor
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time-Father’s Day
Dear Friends in Christ,
The school year has officially ended. We had our eighth grade
graduation at St. Joseph School on June 8th. It is sad to see our graduates go,
but we realize that it is time for them to move on to the next part of their journey.
The last day of school for the rest of the students was on Thursday, June 11 th.
There were many happy faces on that day, and a few sad ones (mainly parents).
I can remember how great I felt when the last day of school finally arrived. There
is joy in getting a break, and the opportunity to rest a little. There is also
something special about completing a journey, and moving on to a new, and
hopefully, exciting part of our life.
On our journey through life God places people in our path who are able
to help us. It’s amazing how God always seems to place the right people in our
path at the right time. Of course, it is necessary to choose a good path to begin
with. We all know that some people choose a path that is not so good. This kind
of path can lead to many troubles. God is constantly trying to help the lost person
find his or her way back to the right path (see Lk 15). Some people can
stubbornly keep going down the wrong path. It takes a person who is humble and
open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in order to find the right path and stay on
it.
One person that God can place in our midst to help us stay on the right path is the father of the family. A father can play a tremendously
important role in someone’s life. A father has an excellent opportunity to influence his children in a very positive way. There have been many
studies that show how damaging it can be for a child’s life when a father is absent. Children who do not have a father figure in their lives are more
prone to all kinds of negative things and developing bad behaviors.
The father of the family represents our heavenly Father, who is the Father of us all. “For this reason I kneel before the Father, from
whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” (Eph 3:14-15) “The divine fatherhood is the source of human fatherhood.” (CCC 2214)
What an awesome responsibility it is that the father of the family represents God the Father. But God does not give a father this responsibility
without His help. God offers an abundance of grace to be able to fulfill this role. “The Lord is my strength and my shield, in whom my heart trusted
and found help.” (Ps 28:7) We should pray for our fathers that they may be good leaders of their families, guiding their flock upon the right way.
May their love and example show us the love that our heavenly Father has for each one of us. A love that is everlasting.
St. Joseph, stepfather of Jesus, pray for us!
