SHEPHERD’S CORNER
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ.
Greetings of Peace!
In the Gospel of Luke 11:1-13, Jesus was praying in a
certain place and when He had finished, one of His disciples
said to Him, “Lord teach us how to pray.” And Jesus taught
them the Lord’s Prayer. “Our Father”.
I heard some people would openly say, why bother to pray,
I have nothing to ask for, because I have what I want.
Others would say, I pray but nothing happens, so why
waste time? These are common complainants about prayer.
There are three questions about prayer that I would like to
discuss in this reflection. What is prayer? Why do we need
to pray? What is the best prayer?
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY PRAYER? Prayer is an expression of
one’s desire for communion with God. Spiritual writers
usually define it as “the lifting up of mind and hearts to
God” or “the communication between God and human
being.” Prayer is a Father and child communication, it must
be personal and intimate.
WHY DO WE NEED TO PRAY? Jesus who is God himself
always is in communion with the Father through prayer. He
asks His disciples to pray always, so that they won’t be
subjected to temptation. He teaches His disciples to pray
and He asks us to pray constantly. Mary, the mother of
God is sinless, prayed. All the saints in heaven prayed. Our
brothers and sisters who were not Christians prayed many
times in a day. How much more for us who claim to be
followers of Christ. A Christian without Christ is NOTHING.
If we take out the word CHRIST from the word CHRISTIAN,
the remaining letters are IAN which means I Am Nothing!
In short, without Christ, I am nothing. Pray always because
Jesus is faithful to all His promises.
WHAT IS THE BEST PRAYER? The perfect prayer is the
Lord’s Prayer – The OUR FATHER. We often pray the Lord’s
Prayer but it loses its teeth because we pray this without
any reflection or without meaning. We see that prayer,
according to Jesus, is a child-father affair. It’s a family
affair based on a relationship of love and intimacy not on
power and authority.
The best way to know more about prayer; to find the
answer why we need to pray; and to find the perfect way of
praying: is to ASK, to SEEK and to KNOCK- as Jesus
assures His disciples in the Gospel “Ask, and it will be given
to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened
to you.” (Luke 11:9)
Let us pray for one another…God bless us all.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Jojo
Community Life
Welcome to St. Michael’s! If you are visiting with us this
weekend, or have been away from the Church for a while, we invite
you to become an active part of our parish community. Registration
forms may be found in the bulletin racks. Please fill one out and
return it to the Parish Office or drop it in the collection basket. We
encourage all to share fully in the life of the parish by being actively
involved in our ministries and being faithful stewards of time, talent
and treasure. Please prayerfully consider how God is calling you to
proclaim the Good News in our parish community. If you have a
change of address or phone number or are moving out of the
parish, please notify the Parish Office as soon as possible. Also,
when adult children turn 18, they should register under their own
names as soon as possible. If you are not Roman Catholic, please
know that you are most welcome. While we are unable to extend an
invitation to our non-Catholic brothers and sisters to receive Holy
Communion, please feel free to come forward at Communion time
and ask for a blessing.
Bienvenidos a San Miguel!
