Félix Fernández is the co-host of Univision’s original weekly sports show, “República Deportiva” (Sports
Republic). Airing live every Sunday afternoon, the show presents the latest international sports news,
commentary and analysis of the week’s most notable games, plus interviews with distinguished sports
figures.
A widely recognized star in Mexican soccer, Fernández has a wealth of expertise from his long-running
career in professional sports. He began his career in 1981 playing soccer, when he was selected as the
goalkeeper for the UNAM Pumas team. Later, after taking a two-year hiatus to play tennis, Fernández
returned to the field as the goalie for the Texcoco Toros. He moved up to first division soccer in 1988 with
Atlante, a team he stayed with for 13 years, winning the Mexican national championship in 1993. That
same year he was also chosen to be a part of the Mexican national team, and had the honor of playing in
the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™.
Besides being an exceptional soccer player, Fernández, widely known as “El Gato” (“The Cat”), is also a
seasoned sports journalist. During the past 15 years, he has been a newspaper columnist in one of the
most prestigious newspapers in Mexico. He is also a radio commentator, as well as a co-host of television
sports programs in his native Mexico.
Fernández recently authored his memoir, “Guantes Blancos: Las Redes del Fútbol” (White Gloves: Soccer
Nets) and has participated as a guest writer in several soccer anthologies published in Mexico.
