SUMMARY COUNTRY ANALYSIS
Respondents in Spain have some of the most positive attitudes in Europe towards development aid. Along
with those in Germany and Portugal, they are the third most likely to say helping people in developing
countries is important (all 93%). More than three quarters agree that tackling poverty in developing countries
should be one of the EU’s main priorities (78% vs. an EU average of 69%). Along with those in Sweden,
respondents in Spain are the most likely to agree that this should be one of their national government’s
main priorities (63%).
More than one quarter of respondents in Spain say development aid should be increased beyond what has
been promised (26%) – the highest proportion in any Member State after Romania, and much higher than
the EU average of 16%. There has also been a large increase in the proportion of respondents who agree
that official development aid is effective (+8 percentage points, now 74%). This is the highest increase,
along with Romania. Respondents in Spain are the most likely to agree that development aid is a way to
tackle irregular migration (88%), along with Cyprus.
The proportion of respondents in Spain who have heard of the Sustainable Development Goals is close to the
EU average (35% vs. 36%), and the proportion who are aware that 2015 was the European Year for
Development is the same as the EU average (18%).
Europeans are most likely to consider peace and security (41%), health and education (both 34%) as the
most pressing challenges for the future of developing countries. By comparison, respondents in Spain are
more likely to mention health (42%), followed by peace and security (36%). They are less likely than the
European average to consider migration issues (7% vs. 12%) or hosting refugees in developing countries (5%
vs. 8%) as the most pressing challenges.
Spain is one of five countries where at least one in five respondents totally agree that individuals can play a
role in tackling poverty in developing countries (24%), and overall 64% agree to some extent (vs. an EU
average of 52%). The proportion of people personally involved in helping developing countries is close to the
EU average (31% vs. 33%), but respondents in Spain are less prepared to pay more for products from
developing countries (45% vs. 50%).
In line with the EU trend, younger respondents (aged 15-24) in Spain generally show more positive attitudes
towards development than older respondents (25 or over). In particular, they are much more likely to say
development aid should be increased beyond what has already been promised (41% vs. 24%). They are also
more likely to believe that individuals can play a role in tackling poverty (81% vs. 62%), and are more
prepared to pay more for products from developing countries (68% vs. 42%).
