Sinopsis
El 8 de agosto de 1991, un barco albano llega al puerto de Bari con 20 mil personas
a bordo. El barco se llama Vlora. Si lo miras de cerca, parece una colonia de
hormigas, una confusa concentración de cuerpos agarrados entre ellos. Es difícil
echar amarras y algunos se tiran por la borda y nadan hasta tierra, otros gritan a
coro "Italia, Italia", haciendo la señal de la victoria con los dedos. El Vlora es un
barco mercantil viejo y deteriorado. El 7 de agosto de 1991, el barco llegó al puerto
de Durrës, procedente de Cuba, con 10 mil toneladas de azúcar en su bodega.
Mientras descargan el azúcar, miles de personas atacan al barco y fuerzan al
capitán a dirigirse a Italia. El motor está a punto de romperse; no tienen agua ni
comida. Solo azúcar. Cae la noche y el capitán evita una colisión por los pelos. A la
mañana siguiente, una ciudad incrédula y asombrada espera al Vlora y los albanos,
tras un largo proceso de desembarco en el puerto, son dirigidos a un estadio de
futbol vacío antes de ser enviados de vuelta a casa. Han pasado veintiún años
desde que eso ocurrió. La mayoría de las personas que iban a bordo del barco
fueron deportadas a Albania, pero siguieron insistiendo y muchos de ellos volvieron
al país transalpino. Actualmente viven en Italia cuatro millones y medio de
extranjeros.
Synopsis
On August 8, 1991, the ship Vlora, returned from Cuba and arrived at the port of
Durazzo, Albania, with 10,000 tons of sugar in stowage. During the unloading
process, a once in a lifetime opportunity presented itself to residents of Durazzo and
they took advantage literally in their tens of thousands. An uncontrollable throng of
men, women and children climbing aboard the boat, forcing the captain to deliver
them to a new life. The passage was rough and dangerous for all 20,000 people
crowded aboard. To those who saw her approaching from the port of Bari, Italy, the
ship resembled a teeming ant hill, an ill-defined mass of bodies clinging to one
another, yelling out in a chorus “Italia, Italia”. Upon docking, mayhem ensued from
the hysteria of the hordes, many of them suffering from dehydration and exhaustion,
each person fighting for a chance at a new life. The Human Cargo is a dramatic,
little-known piece of history shown through extensive footage of breathtaking
scenes, and told from the perspectives of those who experienced it themselves.
