The RC Church of St. Leo This Week The Altar Wine was donated In Loving Memory of: Rocco Argenzio, birthday By: Donata Argenzio and Family PLEASE PRAY For the sick of our parish: (Names can be found on our bulletin board) For our Service Men and Women, especially: Lieutenant John Macri (Please call the Rectory Office to submit names) For those who entered Eternal Life this week: Emilia Santeufemia May she rest in peace. From the Pastor’s Desk – Twenty years ago tomorrow (October 31, 1996), our Diocesan Bishop, Nicholas DiMarzio, will mark his anniversary of episcopal ordination. Ordained first as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., Bishop Dimarzio very quickly was appointed the Diocesan Bishop of Camden, NJ in 1999. Then, just as quickly, he was named Diocesan Bishop of Brooklyn on October 3, 2003. Twenty years is a long time to serve as a bishop: the responsibilities are great, the hours are long, and the scope of the work spans the entire country (all bishops are members of the National Conference). Of course, bishops rely heavily on God’s grace to carry out their ministry, and we help him also by our prayers at every Mass (an intention for him is built into the Eucharistic Prayer). Please join me in remembering him in our prayers today and tomorrow. This Thursday, I plan to join my fellow priests in a special Mass offered by Bishop DiMarzio for the repose of the souls of deceased priests and bishops of Brooklyn/Queens. Later that same day, I will offer a special 7:30 p.m. bi-lingual Mass for our deceased parishioners, especially those recently deceased. It is, after all, All Souls Day. Please join us if you can. Election Day is coming quickly – Tuesday, November 8th. If you are registered to vote – and I hope you are – please go to your designated polling place and cast your vote. Every registered voter should have received a mailing giving you your polling place, but if you lost it, you can find it through this website: www.nyc.pollsitelocator.com. Finally, “Where have all the hymnals gone?” If you have taken – accidentally, I’m sure - one of our Flor y Canto hymn books home, please bring it back. We need every copy in church, so we can praise God in song. Parish money paid for them. They need to come back. May God bless you. – Fr. Hoppe. IN MEMORY This week we honor the memory of our former Pastor, Rev. William F. Kiely who served our parish for 7 years, from 1929 to 1935. He died on October 31, 1935. Please pray for the repose of his soul. May we continue to build on the work that he contributed by his faithful service. Sunday, October 30, 2016 BLOOD DRIVE TODAY Our parish is hosting a Blood Donation Drive – in Msgr. Barretta Hall – from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. TODAY!!. Please see our website for information about who can give. Your donation is literally life-giving. ALL SAINTS DAY This Tuesday, November 1st, is a holyday of obligation to assist at Mass. Mass for the feast will be offered on Monday at 7:30 p.m. (the vigil), Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. All parishes in our deanery have special Masses as well. Please check to see which parish best fits your schedule. St. Paul (718-271-1100); Our Lady of Sorrows (718-424-7554); Blessed Sacrament (718-6393888); St. Joan of Arc (718-429-2333); St. Bartholomew (718-424-5400); St. Gabriel (718-639-0474); Our Lady of Fatima (718-899-2801). ALL SOULS DAY The parish will offer a Special Mass this Wednesday, November 2nd at 7:30 p.m. to pray for the faithful departed souls from our parish, especially those who died this past year and were buried from our church. Letters of invitation have been mailed out to those families, but the Mass (bi-lingual) is open to everyone. We hope you can be with us as we remember our loved ones at Mass. Special Second Collection Next Weekend our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission: “Serving those who serve” and its ministry to provide the same pastoral care and services to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veteran Affairs’ Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations, as does any other Catholic diocese. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chaplains are paid by the U.S. Government, the AMS receives no funding from government or the military for its programs and services, including the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program, which provides priests for home dioceses and for the military chaplaincy. To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection. You can also pick up an informative flyer found in the back of our church. Thank you to everyone who gave a gift last weekend on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Matthew. Your gift will go a long way to helping those who lost so much. God bless you. 2017 Mass Book The 2017 parish Mass Book will open soon. Please pick up an application in the back of the church to reserve your Mass date and intention. FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN NOVEMBER A great number of young people (108) will be receiving their Confirmation on Saturday, November 19. Due to the high number of candidates, there will be two ceremonies: one at 10 a.m. in the morning and the other at 2 p.m. This year the two ceremonies will be presided over by Colombian Bishop Alfonso Cabezas, C.M., a member of the Vincentian community. Approximately half of the candidates have already chosen which ceremony they want to attend. The other half has to visit the Office of Faith Formation to select the time of the ceremony. There will be a practice or rehearsal for each ceremony: Thursday, November 17, two days before the Confirmation. The ones who selected the 10 a.m. Mass will have their practice at 6 p.m. in the basement of the church, while the ones who selected the 2 p.m. Mass will have their practice at 7:15 p.m. on the same day at the same place. The RC Church of St. Leo 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal “Share the JOY of the Gospel” Thank you to all (156 or 4.5% of our parishioners) who have made pledges / gifts to this year’s diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal. The goal for St. Leo is $36,112.00. Everyone is invited to pledge to this Appeal. The most recent report from the Diocese reveals that our pledged amount so far is $30,580, or 84.7% of our goal in pledges. With just another 54 additional pledges of $100 (or $50 a month for the 2 remaining months of the year) our parish will make and possibly exceed its goal. Pledges can be paid up until Dec. 31st of this year. Please pray for our success. Pledge cards are in church for your convenience / use. NB. When making a payment in cash or check, please include the payment card. It contains important information such as your ID number, your name / address, and the name of this parish. All are important for proper record keeping and credit for your donation. Remember – don’t throw out the payment card. Send it in with your payment. GENERATIONS of FAITH This Capital Campaign – with a five-year redemption period – is a success because of our faithful and generous parishioners. Would you like to join them and make a pledge? Pledge cards are available at the rectory office (some have been placed in the church). Thank you for your consideration. So far, it appears we have attained our assigned goal (in pledges) of $520,000.00. But these are pledges that are redeemable over the next five years. It also seems that some 120 people who made pledges have not yet started to redeem them. Perhaps we do not have your correct address. You can always return your pledge payments to the rectory office and save some postage. Please include your payment card when making a payment. The Altagracia Society invites you to see a beautiful play called “Samson” showing in a theatre in Lancaster, PA on Saturday, December 10th For more information call Mr. or Mrs. Payano— 718-592-9749 917-364-8996 or 917-363-6077. Parish Food Pantry The Food Pantry opened last Wednesday (October 26th) and we are out of food again. Please remember to bring some non-perishable food with you when you come to Mass next week. Thank you. Rice, beans, cereal, soup, pasta, baby food are all needed items, as long as they are non-perishable. We have placed a blue tub in the church vestibule to accept your donations. Jesus tells us: “Then the king will say…Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you…for I was hungry and you gave me food…” (Matt 25:34-35).
