¿A qué estado viniste cuando te mudaste por primera vez a los
Estados Unidos?

What state did you arrive to when you first moved to the United
States?
Brownsville, Texas. Texas.
¿Era difícil adaptarte a un nuevo lugar que no conocías antes?
Pues sí, de primero sí, es difícil porque no conoces a nadie.
Te sientes sola sin familia.
Was it difficult to adapt to a new place that you had never been
to before?
Well, yes, at first it was difficult because you don’t know anyone, you feel alone without family.
¿Qué tan diferente es tu vida aquí en los Estados Unidos
comparada a la que tenías en México?
Pues, es muy diferente porque aquí los dos en la pareja tienen
que trabajar para salir adelante, y allá no hay trabajo y pues no
más el hombre es el que trabaja, la mujer no.
¿De los dos estados en que has vivido cuál se te hizo más
difícil adaptarte para vivir, Texas o Florida?
Florida, bueno, porque llegas y no conoces a nadie. No más
estamos la familia –el esposo, los hijos y sin más familia–.
¿Tú crees que es difícil para los hispanos vivir en los Estados
Unidos?
Bueno, para unas personas sí porque, para empezar a estar
en Estados Unidos, los mexicanos o hispanos tienen que estar
legales para poder trabajar, porque si no están legales no
pueden conseguir trabajo y seguir adelante.
¿Cuál fue la razón que tuviste para venir a los Estados Unidos?
Después de que me casé mi esposo tenía su trabajo acá en
Estados Unidos y nosotros vivíamos en México y el decidió
traernos para Estados Unidos.
¿Era fácil tener hijos y trabajar a la misma vez?
No, es difícil cuando ya en la pareja hay familia. Es difícil por
una parte si no tiene quien le cuide los hijos. En mi caso, mi
esposo y yo nos dividíamos el tiempo, el horario de trabajo.
Él trabajaba en la mañana y yo trabajaba en la noche, en la
tarde. Cuando yo trabajaba, él se quedaba con los niños y
cuando el trabajaba yo estaba en la casa con los niños.
How different is your life here in the United States compared to
your life in Mexico?
Well, very different because here both partners have to work to
progress in life and in Mexico there are not a lot of opportunities
for women, so only men work.
From the two states in which you have lived, which one has
been more difficult for you to adapt to, Texas or Florida?
Florida, because you arrive here and you don’t know anyone,
only your close family is with you – your husband, children –
and no other family.
Do you think it’s difficult for a Hispanic to live in the United
States?
Well, yes, for some people. To start, in order to live here in the
United States, Mexicans or Hispanics must have a legal status
in order to work. If you are not legal you can’t work or progress
in life.
Why did you to come to live in the United States?
Well, after I got married my husband had a job in the United
States and we lived in Mexico and he decided to bring us to
the United States.
Was it easy to have children and work at the same time?
No, it is difficult when you are married and have a family.
In part, it is difficult if you don’t have anyone to take care of
the children. In my case, my husband and I took turns and
divided up our work schedules. He would work in the morning
and I worked at night or in the afternoon. When I worked,
he stayed with the children, and when he worked, I stayed
with them.
