Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony
(Mahatma Gandhi)
The God of peace is never glorified by human violence. " (Thomas Merton)
Non-violence has its root, its explanation in something deeper, which is "peace". Peace is
truth. With the approach of Advent, I propose we take the time to pray for peace, work for
peace, think about peace and try to go deeper into the many faces of peace. Peace is multiple
in its concepts and only to name a few:
•
•
•
•
•
Biblical Peace: At Christ's birth the Angel's .message was: "peace to people of good
will". This "peace" does not eliminate war, sin, hatred, greed, etc., but, it does ask of
people to do all in their power ... in their being to bring about the reality of "peace".
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, there are many references to peace.
Greek Eirene: goddess of peace, also concept of inner satisfaction, a contentment and
serenity that comes from living a full life.
Shalom: safety, welfare, prosperity. "Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and
called it Yahweh-Peace." (Judges 6:24)
Non-violent lifestyle: characterized among people by respect, justice and goodwill
The Innsbruck School of Peace Studies thinks of "peace, as a plurality". This idea is
that there are many manifestations of "Peace", and that there is no one single
definition of peace. They see peace as hopeful and not something that has an end,
rather, they see peace, as existing in the present. They say that: "we can create and
expand it in small ways in our everyday lives, and peace changes constantly. This
view makes peace permeable and imperfect rather than static and utopian." (A Call for
Many Peaces)
•
Inner Peace: Peace of heart, mind and soul
Peace can be defined as an end of something, which is negative and is rather limiting. The
term "peace", varies with religions, cultures and as a study. Mahatma Gandhi said that an
oppressed "society lacks violence" but this society is not peaceful. It is fearful. Galtung
spoke ofa "positive peace", that is, a peace withjustice .... the idea that "justice and peace
shall kiss". Peace is what happens when all peoples are free to develop themselves in the way
they want, without having to fight for their rights" (Bruno Picozzi)
There is another term: "Charask Shalom", which means: "hold your peace". Charask means
"to scratch, to engrave, to plough; to be deaf, imagine, speak not a word, be still." Another
idea found in the O'T. "Be still and know that I am God". In our world, we are searching for
and striving toward a world peace and personal peace. May our efforts at non violence,
embrace and envelope our world, as we grow in the meaning of peace in our lives!
"Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not
your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

much as referencias a la paz.
Shalom: seguridad, bienestar, prosperidad.
(Juan 14:27)
