News from the Principal. Dear Raleigh Park Parents, Please remember when you come to visit, volunteer or pick up students at Raleigh Park, we need you to sign in and wear your school/PTO identification. One of our major areas for concern is that sometimes we have parents who are entering the building and visiting areas of the building without wearing appropriate identification. Unfortunately, this practice makes it very difficult to monitor adult visitors and could create a situation that compromises student safety. As you know, parents are always welcome at Raleigh Park. We ask that you please let us know you're visiting by signing in and wearing your Raleigh Park ID. If you've forgotten your volunteer badge or if you haven't received it yet, please stop in the office and pick up a visitor's sticker. Student supervision at Raleigh Park begins at 8:10 AM each school day morning. Students should plan to arrive at school some time between 8:10 AM and 8:30 AM. All student drop-­‐off and pickup should occur at the curb next to the music portable or at the front of the building. If you are parked waiting for students please remember to pull as far forward as possible. Picking-­‐up and dropping-­‐off students in other locations may put them at risk by disrupting traffic patterns. Please remain with your vehicle when dropping students off in the morning or when picking them up in the afternoon. Leaving your car unattended in the drive through lanes causes serious traffic problems and creates a dangerous situation for students. Driving safely and with patience before and after school times will help us maintain N

And it’s good for you, it's fun and it's even better when you walk with your friends!! Walk and bike to school with friends and family in February and show how much you like being happy and healthy!! Our school parking lot is very congested at the beginning and end of each school day. Private vehicles, buses, walkers and bikers are all wanting to enter the school grounds at the same time. Please remember that we are all responsible for our own AND each other's safety. Pay attention to crossing guards, traffic laws and common courtesy when entering or leaving the parking lot and driving through our neighborhood. We can all be safe when we work together! The Beaverton School District has received nearly $3 million more in local option revenue than the original projected amount of $15 million. This is due to the actual tax collections received from November to mid-­‐December 2013, an improving economy and property values. The purpose of the local option levy was to prevent teacher cuts, restore some previously cut teaching positions and address some extreme class sizes. The local option revenue does not restore multiple years of budget reductions ($142 million), but it does change the trajectory in a positive way. Over the last few weeks, we have worked collaboratively with principals to identify teaching areas to be addressed with these additional local option funds. The funds will be targeted to reduce larger class sizes and increase student achievement. The process involved reviewing current class size and achievement data. Every school benefited from these additional funds. This is another opportunity for all schools to prepare students to be college and career ready, and to meet the different needs of our students. We are grateful to our supportive and generous community as WE work together to help every student succeed. Mensaje del Distrito para la Comunidad
El Distrito Escolar de Beaverton recibió casi más de $3 millones adicionales a la cantidad originalmente anticipada de $15 millones en la recaudación de ingresos de la opción local. Next Wednesday’s PTO Meeting: Helping Your Kid(s) with Homework and Organizing for Success/Presentation of Potential Surplus Spending Come to next week’s PTO meeting, Wed. February 12, 1t 6:30pm. We’re fortunate to have 4th grade teacher, Kyle Piper-­‐Smyer, provide some valuable information about helping your kids with homework and organizing for success. Maybe homework time is a total breeze at your house. I, for one, am looking forward to learning a thing or two. Bring your questions and learn from an expert. After soliciting ideas from teachers, staff and parents for the last several months, we have a number of key spending proposals to present and discuss at next week’s meeting. Some proposals include PYP support, innovative classroom technology, RPTV, bike racks and a reader board. I encourage everyone to come to the meeting to hear the proposals and provide your feedback. Carol Delgado will be providing simultaneous Spanish translation for anyone who would like that. And while I’ve struck out (for now) in finding supervision for elementary school age kids (still looking if you know some high school kids who need volunteer credit), bring your child(ren) if that’s a barrier to attending the meeting and you think they can read or otherwise occupy themselves relatively quietly during the meeting in the Library. After all, we’re a parent organization. PYP Happenings
Our Learner Profile focus for February is CARING. You are CARING if you try to help others, are considerate of other people's feelings, and are thoughtful of your actions on the environment. Students are recognizing the CARING actions of others as well as themselves. As you walk the halls of Raleigh Park this month, notice the hearts and displays that explain how CARING we are. All grade levels have started their first Units of Inquiry! Students are engaging in inquiry activities that will help them understand the central idea (these are the ideas shared on our Programme of Inquiry Board in the school’s entry) of their unit. This may look like reading for information to share with others, developing and refining their own definition of key vocabulary words, interviewing experts or reflecting on an in class simulation of a real life event. These types of inquiry activities help students take ownership of their own learning and in turn deepen their understanding of concepts. The teachers have worked hard to develop engaging units that foster the inquiry process. Ready for Kindergarten? We are getting ready for our incoming kindergartners, but we need your help. If you have a child who will be 5 by September 1st please contact the Raleigh Park office. We would like to collect your information, put you on our mailing list and provide you with an enrollment packet Thank You’s!
One of the special things about Raleigh Park are our traditions. We had yet another successful and fun Sock Hop due to the work of a number of people. Thanks to Jami Blanchard, Sean Herron, Peter Jewett, Mitzi Sandman, Shyla Spicer, Shannon Sanford, Brandi Wachs, and all the other parents and 5th graders who helped staff the event.
