Be Lovers of God
Dear Friends,
Saint Paul reminds us that every member of the body of Christ must
contribute. Last week we heard that there are different gifts but the same
Spirit. This week he tells us that everybody is needed for the body to work
well. Whether you’re young or old, Spanish or English speaking, rich or
poor, you are essential to this community’s mission. We need everyone
to recognize the Spirit’s gifts and commit to sharing the gifts. Along the
same line, we all need to remember that everyone has gifts to share and
allow them to share their gifts, even if their gifts are quite different than
our own.
When I was a young priest I convinced a
Confirmation candidate who had asked me to
sponsor him for the Sacrament to choose the name
Theophilus. I distinctly remember the look on the
bishop’s face as he sealed the young man’s forehead
with the Sacred Oil. With a great smile he said,
“Theophilus, be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit!” Later, the bishop
reminded the confirmand that he needed to show God that he loved him.
Sometimes I think about our mission statement that says, in part,
we declare “all are welcome in this place.” I would say all are more than
“welcome.” My mantra declares, “All are needed in this place!” With my
whole heart I believe that everyone has a gift or gifts to share. My sincere
hope is that in this year of mercy all will commit to sharing their gifts.
We need you. I need you! Saint John Berchmans thrives when all of its
parishioners share their gifts.
Saint Luke, in his Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles, writes
to Theophilus - the lover of God - and to us, whom he hopes through
his testimony that we too may come to know and love God who makes
himself manifest in Jesus and in the Church. When we come to know and
love God, when we come to know and love the Church, we become truly
members of his body. The young man chose the name Theophilus, and did
his best to show God that he loved him. With the Spirit of the Lord upon
him, in the Sacrament and in life, he listened carefully to God’s call, and
discerned whether serving God as a priest was his vocation (all young
people owe it to God to consider the priesthood or religious life). After
he served for a year as a volunteer in a Mexican orphanage, he ultimately
decided he was called to marriage. He now lives as a faithful husband and
dedicated father. Lovers of God receive the Spirit and allow the Spirit to
lead them. Lovers of God must discern God’s will and participate in the
Spirit’s mission of mercy.
I had a great experience a couple of weeks ago after Mass. I cannot
remember what I said that spurred our church step interaction. A
relatively new parishioner stopped me to remind me that he was willing
to help in any way. He said, “Just call me. I will do anything. I’m in
education. I can help there. I speak Spanish... Heck, I would even clean
toilets...” Gratitude filled my heart. I knew his words weren’t empty. He
had already volunteered to bring meals to a family, he joined a pastoral
council commission and he’s been around for most events. The Spirit of
the Lord is upon him, and he knows it, and he’s willing to be sent.
Every time I hear the name Theophilus, I think back to that moment
and the young man’s journey. God calls each of us to a similar journey.
As Jesus read from the Prophet Isaiah regarding the outpouring of Lord’s
Spirit upon him, and the mission the Spirit gave him, so too must we be
aware of the Spirit’s gifts to us and the mission on which God sends us. In
a special way this year, in thisYear of Mercy, Jesus’ mission of bringing glad
tidings to the poor, of proclaiming liberty to captives, and announcing a
year of favor must be your mission and mine. With urgency, I encourage
you to make mercy, the working of mercy and the living of mercy your
goal this year.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, and you. In this Year of Mercy,
let’s be sent!
Peace,
PS.With 5 days to go, we still need to raise $9,000 to reach our $900,000
goal. Please give.
Our Mission:
Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and
service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

WELCOME THE
STRANGER
Parish Announcements
In his mercy, the Word became flesh and
came among us. He came to what was his
own, and his own people did not accept him.

them. Now we receive the stranger,
and we welcome Jesus. You are no longer
strangers and aliens, but you are citizens
with the saints and also members of the
household of God. (Ephesians 2:19)

Sean Amantes de Dios
Queridos Amigos,
deben contribuir.

This is it! Our Legacy Campaign will officially end next Sunday,
January 31st. We began this year with $1.8 million in debt, and it
looks like we will end it with all of the debt eliminated. But in order
to make that happen, we will need your help.
Last October, Archbishop Cupich announced that nearly 1/3 of the
parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago will close. The two things
they are looking for in a parish are mission vitality and fiscal viability.
EACH AND EVERY member of this parish MUST participate in
the life of this parish in order for us to prove our worthiness as a
sustainable parish. As of today, only 43% of our parish family has
contributed to this debt elimination campaign. Only 43% of this
parish has taken ownership of the parish. Only 43% of this parish
have clearly stated that they want Saint John Berchmans to remain
a operating parish.

2016 Annual Catholic Appeal
Many of you have received letters from Archbishop Cupich and
the campaign staff soliciting your involvement in this year’s
campaign. Commitment weekend for the Annual Catholic
Appeal will take place next weekend.
