Clues to the paternal roots of don Juan de Oñate
José Antonio Esqubel has given us the maternal line, which converted to Catholicism but little has been
written on his paternal side.
Most lineages start with Pedro Belza Naharriondo who lived in the first third of the 15th century, Señor de la
casa solar de Naharriondo en Oñate, taken from Alberto y Arturo Garcia Carrafa, ENCICLOPEDIA
HERALDICA Y GENEALOGICA, Narriondo V. 61 p. 50
If we start at the first paragraph we learn that Pedro Lezcano established this solar (estate) for his descendents,
and Pedro Lezcano was descended from don Lope Diaz de Haro, onceno Señor de Viscaya.
In Alberto y Arturo Garcia Carrafa, ENCICLOPEDIA HERALDICA Y GENEALOGICA,.Haro V.42 p.265
