Net Energy Metering
Before installing rooftop
solar panels or other
renewable energy systems
at your home or business,
learn about Net Energy Metering (NEM) at
sdge.com/nem. You’ll find information about:
• Connecting with the electric grid – the system
of wires, poles, meters, substations and power
plants for meeting regional energy needs.
• Earning bill credits for the excess power
you put back into the electric grid.
• Using your bill credits when you need
electricity from the grid.
With more than 93,000 private solar systems
installed in our service area, we recently reached the
limit for rooftop solar subsidies under the original
NEM program. For rooftop solar projects installed
after June 29, 2016, the new program under the Net
Energy Metering Successor Tariff (NEM-ST) offers
many of the same benefits of the original subsidy
with some key changes:
• A one-time application fee will be charged
for interconnecting solar systems to the power
grid, excluding systems for low-income
housing programs.
• State-mandated contributions, including support
for low-income and energy-efficiency programs,
will apply to NEM-ST customers.
• In 2017, new solar customers will be on time-of-use
rates (rates based on when energy is used).

Meters measure your energy use. If you’d
like to know how to read them, you’ll

• Electric meters, which have scrolling digital displays that show your
kilowatt-hour (kWh) use, date, time
and other system information.
• Gas meters, which have dials that
can be read like the hands on a
clock to measure natural gas use.

gas and electricity distribution.

Gas & Electric® at its facilities and work areas contain
substances known to the state of California to cause cancer
or reproductive harm.
Natural gas
In its original state, natural gas contains substances on the
state’s list of substances known to cause cancer or reproductive
harm. To reduce exposure, leave the area of the gas leak and
call us immediately at 1-800-411-7343.
Natural gas combustion
All combustion, including the combustion of natural gas,
produces substances on the state’s list of substances known
to cause cancer or reproductive harm.
Facilities and work sites
Some materials found at our facilities and work sites contain
substances on the state’s list of substances known to cause
cancer or reproductive harm. We handle all materials carefully
for your good health as well as ours; however, exposure to
substances on the state’s list may occur at these locations.
