El encuentro reunirá a especialistas y académicos de distinta procedencia, personalidades relevantes e instituciones que trabajan en este campo, con la intención de llevar a cabo un balance de las principales tendencias y dinámicas existentes. Con el objetivo de valorar el estado de las relaciones, complejas y en ocasiones asimétricas, en diferentes ámbitos (económico, político, cultural y social) y reflexionar sobre el futuro de los vínculos entre estos dos bloques geográficos, imbricados el uno en el otro por múltiples factores, tanto históricos como demográficos o económicos, este seminario tratará de ser un punto de encuentro en el que se debatan diversas propuestas sobre posibles interacciones y cooperación futuras. Con el fin de mejorar el conocimiento mutuo y los lazos entre las sociedades europeas y árabes, tanto en el marco euromediterráneo como en un marco más amplio árabe y europeo, se propone un análisis de las visiones que el mundo árabe tiene de Europa, la valoración de cómo se han establecido las relaciones hasta ahora, cuáles han sido las actuaciones europeas en el mundo árabe, lo que se ha hecho y lo que está por hacer. Durante el seminario, se presentarán dos estudios realizados por las tres instituciones patrocinadoras: el estudio La Unión Europea y el Mundo Árabe. ¿Cómo ven y qué esperan los árabes de Europa?, elaborado por Casa Árabe y CIDOB, y el Anna Lindh Report on Euromed Intercultural Trends 2010. Ambos servirán a los objetivos que mueven a las tres instituciones: fortalecer y consolidar el conocimiento mutuo y proporcionar instrumentos que sirvan para trazar expectativas de futuro en las relaciones entre Europa y el mundo árabe. Seminar Directors Gema Martín Muñoz, Director General of Casa Árabe-IEAM, Professor of Sociology of the Arab World, Autonomous University of Madrid Andreu Claret, Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation Jordi Vaquer i Fanés, Director of CIDOB Aims In the context of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, three institutions – Casa Árabe-IEAM, Anna Lindh Foundation and CIDOB – have joined forces to organize a platform for encouraging discussion and knowledge about relations between Europe and the Arab world. The meeting will gather experts and academics of diverse origins, leading figures and institutions working in this field, with the intention of reviewing the main existing trends and dynamics. The idea is to evaluate the state of the complex and often asymmetric relations in different fields (economic, political, cultural and social) and to reflect on the future of ties between these two geographic blocs, interwoven by multiple historic and demographic factors. This seminar therefore aims to be a forum in which various proposals regarding possible future cooperation and interaction can be debated. With a view to enhancing mutual knowledge and ties between European and Arab societies, both in the Euro-Mediterranean and broader Arab and European contexts, the idea is to examine the Arab world’s views of Europe, evaluate how relations have been established up to the present, what European actions have been in the Arab world, what has been done and what remains to be done. Two studies conducted by the three sponsoring institutions will be presented during the seminar: the study “The European Union and the Arab World. What do Arabs think of and expect from Europe” written by Casa Árabe and CIDOB; and the “Anna Lindh Report on Euromed Intercultural Trends 2010”. Both serve the objectives that move the three institutions: to strengthen and consolidate mutual knowledge and to provide instruments that can be used to set out future prospects for relations between Europe and the Arab world.
