VI IBERIAN CONGRESS OF ICHTHYOLOGY From 21st - 24th of June of 2016 Murcia, Spain www.um.es/sibic6 SPECIAL SESSION CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN RESEARCH OF EUROPEAN EEL The European eel population has suffered an intense and continuous decline in recent decades; recruitment has decreased in 2015 compared to 2014, from 3.7% of the historical level to a 1.2 in the area of the North Sea and 12.2 to 8.4% in the rest of Europe (ICES / EIFAC / GCFM 2015). During the last years various management measures has been established to ensure the conservation of this flagship species. However, there is a great uncertainty about the resilience of the species because even today no processes that determine the situation of the population are fully known. The objective of this session is identify the challenges and the opportunities offered by research currently eel taking into account the situation of the population, including various aspects such as population control, pathology, parasitology are and control of reproduction in captivity. To do this, Iberian specialist on eel made a summary on the status of the species, its main current threats and potential, the effect of management measures implemented so far and the latest developments in their research. Finally, it held a round table in which specialists and assistants will discuss the challenges and identify opportunities presented research on this fascinating species, using information from the presentations.
