If you’re like me, the true meaning of Memorial Day
feels a little forgotten. The three-day weekend has
become “the kickoff to summer,” “the Memorial Day
Mattress Sale!,” and a day to have a cookout with
friends and family. Although these activities are great,
we all need to reflect on the fact that Memorial Day is
the day to pay tribute to those who died fighting for our
freedom.
At the annual Memorial Day Service at the Sioux Falls
Veterans Administration Hospital, several thousand
people gathered to do just that.
The keynote speaker was Retired Lieutenant Colonel
Scott Redd, U. S. Army. During his address, he talked
about the difficult situations he encountered during his
25-year Army career. He concluded his message by
talking about his most heart-rending duty – delivering
the news to families of South Dakota servicemen who
lost their lives serving our country. As you may imagine,
it was a very moving speech.

I hope you had time to reflect on the true meaning of
Memorial Day. It is safe to say that the quality of life
we enjoy today is due to those who sacrificed so much.

Si eres como yo, el verdadero significado del Día de los
Caídos se siente un poco olvidado. El fin de semana de
tres días se ha convertido en "la patada de salida al
verano," "el Día de los Caídos Colchón Oferta!," y un día
para tener una comida al aire libre con amigos y
familiares. Aunque estas actividades son grandes, todos
tenemos que reflexionar sobre el hecho de que el
Memorial Day es el día para rendir homenaje a los que
murieron luchando por nuestra libertad.
Al servicio anual del Día de los Caídos en la Sioux Falls
Veterans Administration Hospital, varios miles de
personas se reunieron para hacer precisamente eso.
El orador principal fue el teniente coronel retirado de
Scott Redd, Ejército de los Estados Unidos. Durante su
discurso, habló de las situaciones difíciles que encontró
durante sus 25 años de carrera en el Ejército. Concluyó su
mensaje al hablar de su deber más desgarrador - la entrega
de las noticias a las familias de los militares de Dakota del
Sur que perdieron sus vidas sirviendo a nuestro país.
Como se puede imaginar, fue un discurso muy
conmovedor.

Espero que hayan tenido tiempo para reflexionar sobre el
verdadero significado del Día de los Caídos. Es seguro
decir que la calidad de vida que disfrutamos hoy en día se
