RESULTS OF RECENT SURVEY OF ALUMNI

Recently, the Pastoral Institute surveyed the Lay Ministry Program
alumni on a number of topics including ministerial involvement and
the kinds of support that might be provided to commissioned lay
pastoral leaders. The survey conducted in English and Spanish was
sent electronically to 557 persons. 69 responses were received for
a return rate of 12%.
Some highlights of the survey are:
 23% of English responders were male and 77% were female.
21% of the responders to the Spanish survey were male and
79% were female.


The primary areas of ministry after commissioning by English
responders were evangelization / adult faith formation,
consolation ministry and catechesis. For Spanish responders,
the highest three were evangelization / adult faith formation,
other and catechesis.

10 of 69 responders indicated that they were no longer
involved in ministry. All except one said that they wished to
return.

The ministries named most frequently as being needed in
parishes were youth ministry, evangelization / adult faith
formation, young adult ministry and bereavement (English
responders) and evangelization / adult faith formation,
liturgical ministry and catechesis (Spanish responders).
The survey asked about the motivation for completing the Lay
Ministry Program. 94% of English responders and 100% of
Spanish responders indicated that the desire to serve their
parish better was either the most important or a very
important reason.

Hace poco, el Instituto Pastoral tomó una encuesta en el cual se le
cuestionó a los antiguos alumnos del Programa de Ministerio Laico
sobre un número de temas, incluyendo la participación ministerial y
el tipo de apoyo que podría prestarse a los líderes pastorales laicos
comisionados. La encuesta realizada en inglés y en español fue
enviada electrónicamente a 557 personas. 69 respuestas fueron
recibidas para una tasa de retorno de 12%.
Algunos de los puntos más destacados de la encuesta son los



The survey asked
responders to rank on a
scale of 1 (highest) to 8
(lowest) programs that
would strengthen and
enhance the skills of
commissioned lay leaders if
they were offered. 69% of
English responders and 73%
of Spanish responders
indicated that programs of
spiritual formation and faith
support would be most
appealing. In addition, 44%
and 47% of English and
Spanish responders,
respectively, rank theology
and leadership classes as
appealing to them.

responders indicated that
they had used online
resources in their
ministry. 85% and 100%
of English and Spanish
responders, respectively,
said it would be helpful if
the Pastoral Institute
assisted commissioned lay
leaders to prepare for
new roles.

Providing learning
opportunities to hone
skills, better promotion of
lay ministry in the diocese,
access to resources,
people and materials and
more spiritual formation
opportunities all ranked
highly among responders
as ways in which the
Pastoral Institute can help
lay leaders be more
effective in their Church
ministries.

One half of the English
responders and all but
one of the Spanish
responders said that they
would be interested in a
brainstorming session that
would develop the themes
raised by the survey.

FAMILIES ARE MESSY

I recently attended St. John’s
University for a talk called Family
Lessons from Jesus and the
Disciples. This presentation was
part of a series sponsored by the
School of Evangelization in
preparation for the World
Meeting of Families later this
year. The presenter, Marilyn
Martone, Ph.D., was my former
moral theology professor and I
was very excited to hear her
speak after so many years.
Although the turnout was small,
I was pleasantly surprised that
almost half of the persons in
attendance were commissioned
lay pastoral leaders, most of
whom studied in the Spanish
track.
Dr. Martone’s presentation was
not sugar-coated. It was a wakeup call to the problems faced by
many families: one in three
women is abused; families are
not always safe places; families
lack support in rearing children
and caring for grandparents.
She shared some of her own
family life experiences to
illustrate how messy family life
can get. She paraphrased Pope
Francis, referring to the family
as a “field hospital” which is
not perfect and always
beautiful as our culture would
have us believe. It is, however,
a place where we learn to love
and sustain each other. The
Church and our parishes will
have to face many challenges if
we are to effectively minister
to the family. Dr. Martone
suggested three concepts to
help us begin a conversation.

are and have is a gift from God.
This will help to appreciate
each other and to focus on the
importance of people, of

I encourage lay pastoral leaders
to think about these concepts
and to share them with their
pastors to see how they might
be incorporated in parish
ministries. As lay pastoral
leaders we have many
opportunities to make a
difference in the lives of others
as we meet families face-toface in our various ministries.
Whatever our ministry, let us
always be sources of hope,
understanding, compassion,
and healing that we may bring
people into a deeper
relationship with Jesus Christ.
Concept 2: Vulnerability. We
are not self-reliant or burdens.
We need each other. Until we
recognize our own
vulnerability we will not be

Hace poco asistí a la Universidad
St. John para una charla llamada
Enseñanzas de Jesús y los
Discípulos sobre la Familia. Esta
presentación fue parte de una
serie patrocinada por la Escuela
de Evangelización en preparación
para el Encuentro Mundial de
Familias que se llevará a cabo más
tarde este año. La presentadora,
Marilyn Martone, Ph.D. fue mi
antiguo profesor de teología
moral y yo estaba muy
entusiasmada por escucharla
después de tantos años. A pesar
de que hubo poca concurrencia,
fui gratamente sorprendida que

It’s amazing how time flies when
you are having fun and learning
at the same time. I have already
completed the first year of the
Lay Ministry Program. When I
first encountered the call to
serve my parish, it was when I
had the desire to become a
catechumen fourteen years ago.
The only way to serve the parish
and the community was to
become a member of St.
Theresa of Avila.
Our parish was blessed when Fr.
Saint Charles Borno arrived.
Shortly after we met, I asked
him to keep me in mind for the
next training session for
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion. Being a lector and
former member of the English
Legion of Mary just wasn’t
enough for me. Fr. Borno
nominated me to the Lay
Ministry Program.
is something deep within them
that they have not brought to
the Lord in prayer for His
comfort, peace, trust and
guidance. Since I have been in
the Lay Ministry Program, I also
find myself “witnessing” to
people about my faith and how
great God is.
One of the most significant
attributes I have acquired is
how I respond to situations
with people that wear my
patience thin. At times I find
myself feeling “a particular way”
about a family member, spouse,
co-worker, child, stranger and/
or parishioner. I realize it
might not be me; maybe there

REFLEXIONES SOBRE EL PROGRAMA
DE MINISTERIO LAICO

Es increíble cómo pasa el tiempo
cuando uno se está divirtiendo y
aprendiendo al mismo tiempo.
Ya he terminado el primer año
del programa de ministerio laico.
Cuando por primera vez sentí el
llamado a servir a mi parroquia
fue hace catorce años cuando
tuve el deseo de convertirme en
un catecúmeno. La única manera
de servir a la parroquia y a la
comunidad era convirtiéndome
en miembro de Santa Teresa de
Ávila.
Nuestra parroquia fue bendecida
cuando llegó el Padre Saint
Charles Borno. Poco después de
conocernos, le pedí que me
tuviera en cuenta para la
próxima sesión de
entrenamiento para los
Ministros Extraordinarios de la
Sagrada Comunión. Siendo un
lector y antiguo miembro de la
Legión de María inglés no fue
suficiente para mí. El P. Borno
