The Arc: 60 years, 1951-2011
Passion, Conviction, Dedication, Perseverance
This is the story of The Arc of San Diego, a remarkable tale of courage that began with an unexpected
encounter. Sharing a room in a maternity ward, Diane Stice of the Ocean Beach Junior Women’s Club learns
that Dolly Clark’s daughter, Jenny, has Down syndrome. This chance meeting marked the beginning of
momentous change to come.
Sixty years ago, there were few options for children with disabilities. The Ocean Beach Junior Women’s Club
decided to “do something” and formed the Committee for Exceptional Children of San Diego. The Club
ran a notice in the Union Tribune inviting, anyone with an interest to meet at the Gas & Light building in
downtown. That Tuesday, October 23, 1951 at 8 p.m., 120 interested families and friends turned up. On
October 31st, the San Diego Society for Exceptional Children was voted into existence and The Arc of San
Diego, as we know it, was founded.
It was an incredible group...desperate parents, strangers to one another, gathering together because they
knew an alternative had to exist for their children. These pioneers became advocates, public speakers,
lobbyists, fundraisers, writers, and teachers...blazing trails in uncharted territory, overcoming obstacles,
doing whatever it took.
What started out as a small association has grown and matured into a respected and admired organization
with over 1,000 professional staff dedicated to providing a wide array of life-improving services to more
than 2,500 individuals with disabilities.
Now we are privileged to have Mandatory Public Education for all, the Regional Center system, California’s
Master Plan for Special Education, Supplemental Security Income, the Lanterman Act, Deinstitutionalization,
Early Intervention, Employment, Respite Care, Independent Living, and Self-Advocacy.
On the occasion of The Arc of San Diego’s 60th Anniversary, there is a deep sense of history, gratitude, and
pride. The past is a tribute to our pioneers. The future belongs to us.
Child Development Center, first day program,
opens in Mission Valley in March 1955 with
eight students and within two weeks grew
to 14. San Diego County leased us the land
at $1 per year for five years.
Mary Clementine Watson or
“Clem” as she is affectionately
known, is one of the few living
parents who attended the first
meeting at the Gas & Light
Building on October 23, 1951.
Her son Dennis was under five
years of age. Clem volunteered
at The Arc and upon retirement
from San Diego City Schools,
worked as an Instructor at Arrow
Center for 10 years. She was
an active member of the City
Chapter Advisory Board and City
LARCs, serving as President for
many years. “I have very strong
feelings for The Arc. It means a
great deal to me because of my
son and my work.”
“Fortunately for all of us,
we have a rock on which
to build our house. We
have something which
binds us together and
which brings us here
today. It is our belief in
and our respect for the
importance and the
dignity and the rights
and the value of every
single human being.”

Message
Happy Holidays to our Arc
Friends & Supporters!
The holiday season is a time of
joy, reflecting on what we are
grateful for, and giving to those in need. It is my
hope that while you plan your charitable endeavors
you will consider your friends & neighbors who
are living with conditions that make day-to-day life
more challenging. Many consumers at The Arc of
San Diego were born with disabilities or developed
them later in life – and the holidays are a perfect
time to bring extra joy to their lives.
You can help change lives by:
■ Including The Arc of San Diego in your year-end
giving,
■ Donating a gift from our Wish List,
■ Becoming a Member of The Arc of San Diego, or
■ Volunteering at one of our many Arc locations.

Whatever you can contribute during this
season makes a difference to the many
individuals with disabilities in our community.
It has been a very challenging year with
continuing funding cuts for Arc’s core services,
chronic economic downturn with high
unemployment rates affecting many of our
long-time supporters, and now the State is
threatening to enact even more cuts to Arc’s
programs as part of the Budget “Triggers” to
reduce California’s projected deficit.
On behalf of everyone at The Arc of San

and assistance during especially challenging
times for programs for people with disabilities.
We couldn’t do it without you!
Have a wonderful, joy-filled, and safe holiday
season!

Marcie Beckett toured The Herbert L. and Marcella D. Beckett Computer
Resource Lab, named after her parents, at Sulpizio Family Center. Herbert
and Marcella Beckett, through their fund at The San Diego Foundation,
provided an initial gift of $50,000 to establish the Lab and recently
presented The Arc with a grant of $100,000 for continued support.
Marcie observed students being tutored and taking pride in mastering
specific skills. The Lab, which is universally accessible, includes 10
stations outfitted with a variety of adaptive equipment and software
to accommodate users with a range of needs and abilities. Every day,
instructors from San Diego Community College District’s Continuing
Education Disability Support Programs and Services work with students,
individually and in small groups, customizing programs for their particular
academic and technological abilities. Consumers work at their own pace
learning skills such as typing, reading, math/money, searching the internet
looking for jobs, resume building, and posting employment profiles on
social networking sites.
We thank the Becketts for their foresight and generosity to enrich the
educational experiences of our consumers.

Here are a few suggestions to make your year-end giving easier:
Gift of Cash
Making a gift by check or credit card is a convenient way to give to The Arc. If
you itemize, gifts of cash are deductible up to 50% of adjusted gross income.
Gift of Securities
When you donate stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have appreciated, you
avoid paying capital gains tax on the increase in value and claim a charitable
deduction up to 30% of adjusted gross income.
Gift of Real Estate
Giving a gift of real estate such as a personal home, vacation home, acreage, or
farm can be a highly effective philanthropic and financial strategy. Depending on
the type of gift, you may enjoy tax savings, lifetime payments and freedom from
carrying costs, once the real estate is sold.
Gift Through Your Will or Living Trust
After providing for your loved ones, we hope you will leave a specific amount,
percentage of estate, certain property, or “what’s left” of your estate to The Arc.
Gifts included in wills and living trusts are flexible and easy to arrange.
IRA Charitable Rollover
If you are 70 ½ and older, you may transfer up to $100,000 free of tax directly
from your IRA to The Arc. Contact us about your gift and your IRA custodian to
initiate the transfer.
Timing Your Year-End Gift
To qualify for a deduction in 2011, your gift must be postmarked, delivered, or
transacted by Saturday December 31st. Here are some helpful hints:
US Postal Service
The date of the gift is the postmark on the envelope, not the date on the check.
Other Delivery
Items sent via FedEx or UPS or other third party, the date of the gift is the date the
nonprofit signs for the package, not the date it was sent.
Credit Card
The date your account is debited is considered the date of the donation not the
date you mail in your donation.
Stock Transfer
The date of a gift of stock is the date when the asset is deposited in the nonprofit
brokerage account, not the date the donor instructs the broker to make the gift.
After December 16, it may be wiser for you to make your gift by telephone or
online to avoid mailing or shipping delays and assure your credit card gift is
processed in time to count for 2011 tax purposes.

The Arc of San Diego is grateful for the
support from San Diego Unified School District
Community Service Association (CSA). This
year, our programs received $5,000 to fund
technology and art/craft programs at East
County, North County, North Shores, Starlight,
and Sulpizio Centers.
East County and Starlight Centers were awarded
$1,000 each to respectively purchase two Dell
desk-top computers and updated software/
adaptive equipment for their Computer Labs.
North Shores received $1,000 to promote sensory
development. North County was awarded $1,000
to purchase weaving materials for its Textile and
Tied Baby Quilts enrichment class and Sulpizio
received $1,000 for art supplies to sustain its
Artistic Realization Technologies (ART) program.
CSA was organized in 1956 to solicit
contributions from district employees for
distribution to local nonprofits providing
education, health, human services, arts, research,
and literary services. Since its inception, CSA
members have donated over $11,521,556 to
charities in the County.

Promoting Good Health
East County Training Center held its 6th annual Stepping Out Health & Wellness Fair on
September 15th in El Cajon.
The fair, which promotes good health awareness, is an opportunity for consumers to
expand their knowledge of health resources within the community and increase health
advocacy skills while having fun.
As was tradition, the day kicked off with a 10,000 Steps Energy Walk-a-Thon. Keynote
speaker, Dr. Nick Yphantides, San Diego physician and author of My Big Fat Greek Diet
spoke on encouraging and motivating ways to stay healthy. Topics of interest included
Healthy Living, How to Keep Your Weight Down and How to Eat in A Healthy Way.
Exhibit booths featured a wealth of health information.
This popular event attracted more than 230 people including family, friends, and direct
care professionals.
Starlight Center held the 2nd annual International
Food Day on September 21st inviting consumers,
families, caregivers, friends, and staff to a
potluck.
It was a wonderful afternoon with plenty of
delicious food and warm conversation. Four
buffet tables quickly filled up with traditional and
classic ethnic fare including appetizers, entrees,
and desserts. What an amazing spread with
more than 30 dishes representing Mexico, Italy,
Philippines, and the United States! The Parents
Support Group helped serve guests who excitedly
sampled all the offerings.
Organized by staff Shirley Brunson and Sylvia
Luna, the potluck was a great success. Our thanks
to all volunteers and everyone who attended.

This Fall, The Arc of San Diego launched
a new public awareness video campaign
called “Betcha Thought I Couldn't” to
shed stereotypes placed on people with
disabilities.
Tranisha Dangerfield who receives support
from The Arc’s Independent Living Services
and is in college with four classes left to get
her AA in Human Services, Early Childhood,
says, "I've always been told, 'I'm not going
to be able to do this' and 'I'm not going

told I wasn't going to be able to do, I've
actually accomplished - and more."

Our consumers are college students,

December 31: Last Chance to Purchase
Your Commemorative Tile
Honor a family member or friend, memorialize a loved one, highlight a special occasion and make a meaningful
gift when you buy a commemorative tile that shows your support of Arc North County. Starting at only $100,
your purchase is an opportunity to leave a lasting family legacy and mark your commitment and belief in our
mission.
When you purchase a
commemorative tile, you build,
strengthen, and enrich Arc North
County and help consumers
like Sergio have access to vital
programs and a brighter future.
Your gift will help us meet the growing needs of consumers through the renovation of classrooms in our San
Marcos facility to ensure a brighter future.
Please consider making a contribution to the North County Building for Community Capital Campaign today by
logging onto www.arc-sd.com/GiveNorthCounty.
If you need more information about the Tile Wall or additional donation opportunities, please contact Jennifer
Bates Navarra, Vice President of Marketing & Development at (619) 685-1175 ext. 291 or [email protected].
