Milestone
Success
Russell Trent and David Leese celebrated an important
milestone - 20 years, living on their own, actively involved in
their communities!
The Arc of San Diego’s Independent Living Services (ILS) was
instrumental in making this a reality - working closely to build
their confidence, address challenges, and foster growth.
Russell shares an apartment in Pacific Beach with a roommate
and David owns a condo in San Marcos. They are grateful for the
assistance and support they receive.
How has The Arc of San Diego helped you over the
years?
Russell received the Consumer of the
Year Award in 2008 and a Commemorative
Award for 20 years of employment at UCSD.
What do you do on the weekend?
Russell: I bowl and watch baseball. The Cubs are my team.
I’m fond of the Padres, too. I go to concerts - my favorite bands
are Chicago and Iron Maiden. I watch a lot of science fiction
movies.
David: My mom and I go on day trips. We’ve been to Cirque
de Soleil and Yosemite. I sign up for ILS activities. Every year
I attend the People First Self-Advocacy Conference. Sundays, I
am a greeter at my church. I also bowl, run, and ride my bike or
scooter.
Do you have family in San Diego?
Russell: Staff shows me how to find resources in San Diego. They
teach me how to cook, arrange medical and dental appointments,
and clarify instructions given by my doctor.
Russell: My parents live in La Mesa and I really like spending
time with them. I help clean their yard and pool. I have four
brothers and three sisters.
David: They encourage me a lot! I’ve learned about money. Now
I handle my own finances and get help with budgeting. I use a
calendar to remind me when bills are due.
David: Just mom. I’m an only child. But I have many cousins
who I love dearly and many close family friends like Fred and
Mary. They have known me since I was born and are always
there for me.
You’ve both been at your jobs for many years. Tell us
about your jobs.
Russell: I am a Senior Custodian at the UCSD Revelle Campus.
I really enjoy being with my co-workers and I learn a lot from
them.
David: I am a Courtesy Clerk at Albertson’s in La Costa. Been
there six years! I love helping people load their groceries. I have
been Employee of the Month three times.
Independent Living Services (ILS) supports people with
disabilities in their desire to live on their own. Staff work oneon-one with each person, teaching functional skills and providing
direction and guidance based on personal need. For more
information, contact Justin Umpierre, ILS Program Manager, at
(619) 685-1175, ext. 246 or [email protected].
“I could not be where I am now without
The Arc of San Diego, I have gained
self-confidence and learned to be my own person.”

The transfer, if done properly, counts towards the taxpayer’s required minimum distribution for the
year. It can be of particular value to individuals who do not claim itemized deductions on their tax
return because funds are transferred directly to nonprofits from IRA accounts and do not count as
income.
Every person’s circumstances are different, so be sure to consult with your tax advisor to see if an IRA
rollover is right for you. Please contact our Development Department at (619) 685-1175 or visit our
Planned Giving page at www.arc-sd.com/plannedgiving.

Always There For Us!
Thank You to
The Star LARCs (Ladies Auxiliary), at their first meeting of the fiscal year, presented a check
of $13,000 to Starlight Center and $1,000 to the Parent/Infant Program. Monies were raised
primarily through the sales of Holiday Greens, their single largest fundraising event of the year.
Starlight Center earmarked the donation for its Modernization Project while the Parent/Infant
Program traditionally supplements its holiday parties in National City & Chula Vista and meets
program needs.

Fabulous
Fashions
The East County Ladies Auxiliary
(LARCs) held their time-honored
Fashion Show Luncheon on
September 19th at the El Cajon
Elks Lodge.
Guests were treated to a fashion show
featuring casual to dressy outfits
from RV Casuals in Banning. The
highlight of the show was watching
and complimenting the models who
were personally known to everyone –
LARCs Kelly Sadowski and Helen
Masso, East County Training Center
(ECTC) Area Director Monica Peralta
and Case Managers Gina Turner and
Nicole Johnson, ladies from the Red
Hat Society, and Elkonettes.
The annual Fashion Show Luncheon,
in its 51st year, is one of several
fundraisers held by the LARCs to
benefit ECTC. The event raised
$1,000. We extend a special thank
you to the Elks for hosting the event
at their Lodge.

The Arc of San Diego completed a very successful annual
membership campaign in the month of October. The Every ONE
Counts! Campaign generated more than $10,000, exceeding
our goal. We welcome and thank all new members for placing a
strong value on our service. The power of The Arc of San Diego to
advocate for people with disabilities is only made possible because
of members like you.
Holiday

Starlight Auxiliary’s
annual Holiday Bazaar at

thousands of quality, oneof-a-kind holiday crafts,
hand-made embroidered quilts, decorations, jewelry, embroidered linens,
toys, baby clothing, jewelry, collectibles, and white elephant items.
Now, in its fourth decade, members and friends of the Auxiliary begin
preparations early in the year, diligently collecting, cleaning, sorting, and
pricing items. The Auxiliary was fortunate to have help from missionaries
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Bazaar, a major fundraising event, raised more than $14,000 to
support the Starlight Center Building Fund.

Blueprint for Success
Highlights
Every year, consumers participate in Outcomes Measurement, an evaluation survey that collects
responses on quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction with our services and support.
This powerful tool provides the framework to improve and strengthen programs, advance the
well-being of the people we serve, and thoughtfully and consistently fulfill our core mission.
Below is a pictorial summary of results.
*Outcomes Measurement does not account for all individuals receiving services from The Arc. Figures reflect those
individuals recommended for service through the San Diego Regional Center and Department of Rehabilitation.
