Only a few days old and as precious as life itself.
These babies are not only cherished by their
families, but recognized and protected as full
members of their societies.
The birth registration they receive will establish
who they are, and guarantee their fundamental
rights as citizens.
With UNICEF’s support, this hospital in
Venezuela’s Zulia State is among the first to be
equipped with a birth registration unit, providing
free and quick registration to all children born
here.

As part of a nationwide strategy called Trio for
Life, birth registration, immunization and
awareness on breastfeeding are also carried out
in rural areas, so that children - especially the
most impoverished and excluded - can all
benefit.
During this round of Trio for Life campaign,
many children from the indigenous Wayuu
community are immunized against common
childhood diseases such as polio and measles.
Community volunteers use the opportunity to
educate mothers on breastfeeding, the best way
to provide food to babies during the first six
months of life.
While the birth registration rate remains low in
many parts of Venezuela, here in Maracaibo,
capital city of Zulia State, it has reached 86 per
cent.
Soundbite (Wayuunaiki), Sara Mateus,
indigenous Wayuu: “I have 9 children and I
registered the last three in this Trio for Life
programme. They have really benefited a lot
from it.”
