Butler is a communitybased high school that is a part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Operating since 1997, our school was named in honor of David Watkins Butler, an outstanding teacher who perished in a house fire while saving the lives of his family. In 2010 David W. Butler was recognized as an Honor School of Excellence, a distinction held by only 73 high schools which means that our composite Endof-Course Scores were 85.2%. David W. Butler also met 20 out of 20 goals for 2011-12 fulfilling federal guidelines for No Child Left Behind. In 2013, David W. Butler High School was recognized by US News and World Report as the #1 high school in CMS and the 3rd highest rating school in North Carolina. Our Graduation Rate in 2013 was at 93.4 %. Student Populations Grading System Graduation Requirements GPA Current student enrollment is 2086. Ethnic breakdown as follows: African-American-28.5%, American Indian-7.0%, Asian3.6%, Multi-racial-12.2%, Pacific Islander-0.1%, White43.7% and 4.8% other. A = 93-100 B = 85-92 C = 7784 D = 70-76 F = Below 70 Students must graduate with a total of 24 credits in a specific course of study. Students must also complete the NC Graduation Project. Grade Point Average is computed as follows on a 4.0 scale: Quality points are assigned on a basis of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0. One quality point is added for Honors courses (HN). Two quality points are added for Advanced Placement (AP) courses. In the graduating class of 2013, approximately 72 % of the students had the minimum admission requirements to attend a 4 year university. The percentages are as follows: 48% of students attended a four - year university, 39% attended a community college, technical school, and 4% enrolled in the military, 7% workforce and 2% other. 2012 SAT Average Score for college bound seniors: 1512 (3 scores), 1027 (Math and CR) and 528 (Math) and 499 (CR). 2013 AP results: The number of students who received AP Scholar Award RecognitionNational AP Scholar (10), AP Scholar with Distinction (57), AP Scholars with Honors (28) and AP Scholar (56). The senior class of 2013 earned over 5.6 million dollars in combined athletic and academic scholarship awards. Butler students compete for and have earned in the past many prestigious scholarships including the Morehead-Cain, The Park, Levine, Robert C. Byrd, Teaching Fellows, Gates Millennium, National Merit Award and National Achievement Merit Award and Military Academy Appointments/ROTC.
