The purpose of celebrating International Volunteers Day (IVD) is to thank all the
volunteers in the world for what they are doing for the community. This day was designated by
the United Nations in 1985 and has been celebrated worldwide since. Therefore We, CIIC
volunteers, find it important to celebrate this day, and thank all the volunteers also here – in
Gran Canaria.
Our celebration of the IVD will be filled with different activities such as: screening of the movie
Vidas Distantes, various workshops, concerts of local musicians etc. During all day the inhabitants of Las
Palmas de Gran Canaria will have the chance to meet volunteers of different organizations and to consult
them about different topics. Below you can find a more detailed description of the event.
Screening of the movie Vidas Distantes
Place: Biblioteca Pública del Estado near Parque San Telmo

Together with “Biblioteca Pública del Estado cerca del Parque San Telmo” we would like to
present the movie Vidas Distantes (Distant Lives) made by two previous volunteers from Lithuania. It deals
with different visions of life in Gran Canaria that foreign nationals and immigrants have. The screening
will be followed by a discussion on the issues raised in the movie, during this activity spectators will be
able to share their opinion, thoughts or concerns about cultural life and the importance of volunteering. The
discussion will be led by the directors of the movie (Vilma and Paulius).
