IAC STATEMENT ON THE GROWING
REPRESSION IN HONDURAS
FOLLOWING SIGNERS CONDEMN THE ASSASSINATION OF
WALTER TROCHEZ, A LEADER OF THE NATIONAL FRONT
AGAINST THE COUP & L/G/B/T ACTIVIST
WE URGE AN END TO THE REPRESSION AGAINST THE
NATIONAL FRONT AGAINST THE COUP IN HONDURAS & NO
RECOGNITION OF THE ILLEGALLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT
The following lesbian/gay/bi and trans activists as well as progressives in the United States working in solidarity with the
Honduran people and against the U.S.-backed illegal military coup strongly condemn the assassination of Walter
Tróchez, a 25-year-old member of the lesbian/gay/bi/trans community in Honduras and an active participant in the
National Resistance Front.
Tróchez, who had spent years fighting for LGBT rights, had documented the atrocities committed by right-wing forces
since the June 28 coup d'état against President Manuel Zelaya.
On Dec. 4, Tróchez was kidnapped by four masked armed men, severely beaten and interrogated about individuals
associated with the National Resistance Front. He managed to escape, and courageously went public to denounce the
attack. Nine days later, he was shot twice in the chest by a gunman driving by in a car, killing him.
Since the illegal elections of Nov. 29--where despite a 61 percent abstention rate, the Honduran oligarchy claims they
secured an electoral victory in the selection of rightist Porfirio Lobo -- the repression against activists have increased
exponentially. On Dec. 6, five young resistance members were killed, while six others were taken from their homes by
force and interrogated by the police. On Dec. 11, the decapitated body of Santos Corrales Garcia, another resistance
member, was found. Gunmen also burst into the offices of progressive newspaper The Liberator on Dec. 5, threatening
the staff.
Many believe these attacks are an attempt to squash dissent before Lobo is inaugurated in January.
In addition to the general wave of repression, there has been in increase in attacks directed specifically at the LGBT
communities. Members of Honduras’ LGBT communities marched in Tegucigalpa on Oct. 23 to denounce an increase in
murders of and assaults, including harassment and beatings, on LGBT people. Nine transgender people had been killed
in Honduras in the four months between the coup and the march.
We stand in unconditional solidarity with the resistance movement in Honduras, which is waging a noble and just fight
for sovereignty and dignity. In addition, we stand with the LGBT communities, which face such brutal repression and
have bravely demanded their rights.
We demand that these attacks cease, including attacks by police and paramilitaries against the LGBT communities,
youth and students, teachers, unionists and more. We also demand no impunity -- that justice be brought to bear on
those who are ordering and carrying out these atrocities.
We further demand that the U.S. refuse to recognize the illegitimate Honduran elections -- elections that were held in a
militarized country, under the auspices of an illegal coup d'etat -- and cease its support of the illegal government.
Lastly, we demand that the coup-plotters as well as the international community respect the self-determination of the
Honduran people, who for the past five months have demanded the return of their democratically-elected president and
the formation of a Constitutional Assembly. The vicious murder of Walter Tróchez will surely only heighten the resolve of
the resistance movement to achieve victory.

Los/as siguientes activistas lesbianas/gays/bi/trans, así como progresistas en los Estados Unidos que trabajan en
solidaridad con el pueblo hondureño y contra el ilegal golpe militar respaldado por los EEUU, fuertemente condenan el
asesinato de Walter Tróchez, joven de 25 años miembro de la comunidad lesbiana/gay/ bi/trans en Honduras y
participante activo en el Frente Nacional de Resistencia.
Tróchez, que había pasado años luchando por los derechos LGBT, había documentado las atrocidades cometidas por
las fuerzas de la derecha desde el golpe de estado del 28 de junio contra el presidente Manuel Zelaya.
El 4 de diciembre Tróchez fue secuestrado por cuatro hombres enmascarados armados, severamente golpeado e
interrogado sobre individuos asociados al Frente Nacional de Resistencia. Logró escapar y valientemente denunció
públicamente el ataque. Nueve días más tarde, un pistolero viajando en un automóvil le disparó dos veces en el pecho
matándolo.
Desde las elecciones ilegales del 29 de noviembre, donde a pesar de una tasa de abstención del 61 por ciento, la
oligarquía hondureña afirma que aseguraron una victoria electoral en la selección del derechista Porfirio Lobo, la
represión contra los/as activistas ha aumentado significativamente. El 6 de diciembre, cinco miembros jóvenes de la
Resistencia fueron asesinados, mientras que otros seis fueron sacados de sus casas por la fuerza e interrogados por la
policía. El 11 de diciembre se encontró el cuerpo decapitado de Santos Corrales García, otro miembro de la
Resistencia. El 5 de diciembre unos hombres armados irrumpieron también en las oficinas del periódico progresista El
Libertador, amenazando al personal.
Muchos creen que estos ataques son un intento para debilitar la disidencia antes de la inauguración de Lobo en enero.
Además de la ola general de represión, se ha producido un aumento en los ataques dirigidos específicamente a las
comunidades LGBT. Miembros de las comunidades LGBT de Honduras marcharon en Tegucigalpa el 23 de octubre
para denunciar un aumento en los asesinatos y agresiones, incluyendo acoso y palizas en contra de personas LGBT.
Nueve personas transgénero habían sido asesinadas en Honduras en los cuatro meses entre el golpe de Estado y la
marcha.
Nuestra solidaridad incondicional va al movimiento de resistencia en Honduras que está librando una lucha noble y
justa por la soberanía y la dignidad. Además, nos solidarizamos con las comunidades LGBT que enfrentan esa

Exigimos que cesen estos ataques, incluyendo los ataques por la policía y los paramilitares contra las comunidades
LGBT, jóvenes y estudiantes, profesores, sindicalistas y otros. También exigimos que no haya impunidad, que la justicia
caiga contra aquellos que han realizado esas atrocidades y contra aquellos que las han ordenado.
Exigimos además que los Estados Unidos se nieguen a reconocer las elecciones ilegítimas de Honduras, elecciones
que se celebraron en un país militarizado bajo los auspicios de un golpe de estado ilegal, y que cese su apoyo al
gobierno ilegal.
Por último, exigimos que los golpistas así como la comunidad internacional respeten la libre determinación del pueblo
hondureño que durante los últimos cinco meses ha exigido el regreso de su Presidente elegido democráticamente y la
formación de una Asamblea Constituyente. El asesinato perverso de Walter Tróchez seguramente servirá para
aumentar aún más la determinación del movimiento de Resistencia hasta conseguir la victoria.
