The main objective of this work is to analyze Ecuatorial Guinee´s current National Economic
and Social Plan of Development. This plan is designed to push Ecuatorial Guinee as an
emergent country by 2020, by means of the diversification of the economy and the coverage of
the basic needs of the population. Our hypothesis is that this National and Economic Plan is

going to fail. To show this, we use macroeconomic data and human development index data,
and we compare Ecuatorial Guinee with other countries. We also follow Amartya K Sen’s
book, “Development as freedom” and Daron Acemoglu and J. Robinson’s book “Why nations fail” to
show what is really necessary in the country in order to achieve the National plan targets. We
conclude that Ecuatorial Guinee needs more inclusive political and economic institutions as
well as improving its population liberties to go beyond growth.
