Math Strategies to Focus on This Month!
Below are some strategies that your child is using during their math instructional time. As a goal this
month, have your child explain one of the strategies that they are using during their problem solving at
home.
Kindergarten:
Students are working on counting from 1-100 by ones.
Strategies to try at home:
• Count the number of shoes in your house.
• Count the number of crackers on the table.
Students are using counting strategies to help them organize their counting so that don’t
have to re-count or skip objects.
Strategies to try at home:
• Place crackers in a circle, have your child find a starting point before counting.
• If crackers are scattered on a table, have your child move the crackers into an organized pattern.
• Your child may choose to use grouping strategies such as placing objects in twos, fives, or tens
(note: this is not a kindergarten expectation).
First Grade:
Students are working on problem solving strategies to solve one- digit addition and subtraction.
Strategies to try at home:
Second Grade:
Students are working on mental strategies to add and subtract.
Strategies to try at home:
Mental strategies may include the following:
• Counting on
• Making tens (9 + 7 = 10 + 6)
• Decomposing a number leading to a ten ( 14 – 6 = 14 – 4 – 2 = 10 – 2 = 8)
• Fact families (8 + 5 = 13 is the same as 13 - 8 = 5)
• Doubles
• Doubles plus one (7 + 8 = 7 + 7 + 1)
Third Grade:
Students are working on strategies to solve multiplication and division equations.
Strategies to try at home:

Fourth Grade:
Students are working on strategies to solve 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication equations.
Strategies to try at home:
Fifth Grade:
Students are working on strategies to divide 4 digits by 2 digit numbers.

Estrategias de Matemáticas para concentrarse en este mes!
A continuación tenemos estrategias que su niño(a) está usando durante el tiempo de enseñanza de
matemáticas. Como objetivo de este mes, pida a su hijo que le explique una de las estrategias que están
utilizando en resolver problemas.
Kindergarten:
Los estudiantes están aprendiendo a contar del 1-100 de a unos.
Estrategias que puede usar en casa:
• Contar el número de zapatos que hay en casa.
• Contar el número de galletas sobre la mesa.
Los estudiantes están usando estrategias de contar para ayudarles a organizar
su conteo de modo que no tenga que volver a recontar u omitir objetos.
Estrategias para usar en casa:
• Colocar galletas en círculo, haga que su hijo(a) encuentre donde empezar a contar.
• Si las galletas están dispersas sobre la mesa, haga que su hijo(a) mueva las galletas en un patrón
organizado.
• Su hijo puede optar en utilizar estrategias de agrupación tales como colocar objetos de dos, de
cinco o de diez.
(nota: esto no es una expectativa para kindergarten).
Primer Grado:
Los estudiantes están trabajando en estrategias para resolver problemas para resolver sumas y restas de un
dígito.
Estrategias para usar en casa:
Por ejemplo: Abel tiene 9 pelotas. Le dio 3 a Susan. Cuantos tiene ahora Abel?
Segundo Grado:
Los estudiantes están trabajando en estrategias mentales para sumar y restar.
Estrategias para usar en casa:
Estrategias mentales puede incluir lo siguiente:
• Contando
• Creando cifras de diez (9 + 7 = 10 + 6)
