Charles: Hi Sophy! Are you ready for the maritime exam?
Sophy: Hi Charles! I’m studying shipboard organization. Can we review together?
Charles: Sure! Let’s start. What are the main departments on a ship?
Sophy: There are three main departments: the Deck Department, the Engine Department,
and the Hotel Staff on passenger ships.
Charles: Great! Who is in charge of the Deck Department?
Sophy: The Captain is in charge. He is the highest authority on the ship.
Charles: Correct. Who helps the Captain?
Sophy: The Chief Mate, Second Mate, and Third Mate assist the Captain.
Charles: Good. What about the rest of the deck crew?
Sophy: There are Able Bodied Seamen and the Bosun. They handle maintenance and
operations on deck.
Charles: Excellent! Now, let’s talk about the Engine Department. Who is the leader there?
Sophy: The Chief Engineer is in charge of the Engine Department.
Charles: Right. Who works under the Chief Engineer?
Sophy: The First, Second, and Third Assistant Engineers.
Charles: And what about other engine crew members?
Sophy: There are Oilers, Wipers, an Electrician, and a Pump Man.
Charles: Very good! What does the Electrician do?
Sophy: The Electrician takes care of all electrical systems on the ship.
Charles: And the Pump Man?
Sophy: The Pump Man controls and maintains the pumping systems.
Charles: Perfect! Don’t forget the Hotel Staff on passenger ships.
Sophy: Yes! They take care of passengers, like food service and housekeeping.
Charles: Great job, Sophy! I think we are ready for the exam.
Sophy: Yes, thank you, Charles! This really helped me understand better.
