The animals struggle through a cold winter and in January are short
of , a fact which must be concealed so that they might not be
perceived as failing. Squealer gives ennobling speeches about the glory of ,
the morals of which are made flesh by Boxer who works harder than ever.
In order to feed the animals, Napoleon contracts to sell four hundred eggs a week. The hens
rebel against this so Napoleon cuts their entirely and nine hens
die before they concede defeat.
As life on the farm gets harder, the animals are shocked to learn (via Napoleon and Squealer)
that Snowball has been stealing onto the farm at night and their work.
This explains everything that has gone wrong, even if some animals, including Boxer, are
struggling to comprehend the representation of comrade Snowball as a villain.
Napoleon calls all the animals to the yard where he stages an . Certain
animals are forced to confess to being in with Snowball, whereupon
they have their throats ripped out by Napoleon’s dogs. The savage dogs even attack Boxer,
apparently unordered, but he effortlessly knocks them away with his giant hooves.
at this turn of events, the animals start a chorus of Beasts of England to
cheer themselves up. Squealer interjects and informs them that their anthem may no longer
be sung; it was only about the rebellion, and there is no further need for rebellion, so the
portly poet Minimus has instead composed a new song expressing profound .
