HABITAT DESTRUCTION AND
FRAGMENTATION
Habitat destruction isthe complete loss of a habitat, while
fragmentation refers to the breaking up the habitat into smaller
pieces
Deforestation for agriculture, urbanization, mining. human-made
barriers like roads or buildings
This lead to a decline in the number of species, making more
vulnerable to extinction due to limited resources and inbreeding.
How can we help: protecting areas, reducing pollution and
promoting sustainable practices

INVASIVE SPECIES
Organisms not native to an ecosystem that,
once introduced, cause environmental,
economic, or social harm.
They can be animals, plants, fungi, or
microorganisms.
For example
Cane Toad
Lionfish
Zebra Mussels
Japanese Beetle
IMPACTS ON BIODIVERSITY
Cause extinctions.
Alter soil and water.
Spread diseases.
Prey on native animals or plants.
Outcompete native species.
UNCONTROLLED URBANIZATION
Rapid and unplanned expansion of cities and
urban infrastructure.
Often driven by population growth, economic
pressures, and lack of environmental regulation.
For example
Mexico City, Mexico
São Paulo, Brazil
Mumbai, India
IMPACTS ON BIODIVERSITY
Destruction of natural habitats.
Fragmentation of ecosystems.
Displacement of wildlife.
Soil degradation and vegetation loss.
Increase in pollution.
Water cycle disruption.
CONCLUSION
Why Biodiversity Matters
Biodiversity is under threat from multiple human activities.
It provides essential services: clean air, water, food, climate regulation.
Its loss affects ecosystem health and human survival.
Protecting it is an urgent responsibility.
A sustainable future depends on nature’s balance.
