Description of Cartagena.
Cartagena de Indias, located on the northern coast of Colombia, is one of the most
emblematic cities in the country, known for its rich history, colonial architecture,
paradise-like beaches, and a vibrant cultural life. Founded in 1533 by Pedro de
Heredia, Cartagena has established itself as one of the most attractive tourist
destinations in the Caribbean, attracting thousands of national and international
visitors each year (ProColombia, 2022).
This city is much more than a tourist destination:
It is a symbol of resilience, an architectural gem, and a living space where history,
culture, and the Colombian Caribbean converge. Its accessibility, rich heritage, and
hospitality make it a place that captivates everyone who visits.
Historical and cultural importance of the city.
The relevance of Cartagena lies not only in its scenic beauty but also in its key role
in the history of Colombia and Latin America. During the colonial era, it was one of
the most important ports for trade between Spain and its colonies. Additionally, it
played a fundamental role in the struggle for independence, being one of the first
cities to declare itself free from Spanish rule in 1811 (UNESCO, n.d.). This historical
heritage has left a deep mark on its architecture, traditions, and the cultural identity
of its inhabitants.
Historical heritage.
The historical heritage of Cartagena has been recognized worldwide. In 1984,
UNESCO declared its historic center, known as the Walled City, as a World Heritage
Site. This recognition highlights the preservation of its military and civil architecture
from the 16th to the 18th centuries, as well as its colonial urban planning (UNESCO,
n.d.). The layout of its streets, squares, churches, and walls tells the living history of
the city and its resistance against attacks from pirates and enemy powers.
Tourist places
- Walled City
The Walled City is the historical and cultural heart of Cartagena. Walking through its
cobblestone streets feels like traveling back in time: the colonial houses with flowerfilled balconies, the squares rich in history like Santo Domingo or the Coches, and
the museums such as the Zenú Gold Museum offer an unforgettable experience. In
addition, the bohemian atmosphere, the craft shops, and restaurants make this area
a must-visit for tourists (Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, 2023).
- San Felipe de Barajas Castle.
The San Felipe de Barajas Castle is the most imposing fortress in Cartagena. Built
in the 17th century, this castle was designed to defend the city from land and sea
attacks. Its structure, with underground tunnels and strategic passageways,
demonstrates the high level of military engineering of the colonial era. Today, it is
one of the most visited tourist sites and offers an impressive panoramic view of the
city (ProColombia, 2022).
- Beaches and natural destinations.
Cartagena is also recognized for its warm and crystal-clear beaches. Among the
most popular are Bocagrande and Playa Blanca, the latter located on Barú Island.
Additionally, the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park is an
ideal destination for ecotourism and diving, thanks to its marine biodiversity and coral
landscapes (Lonely Planet, 2023).
- Getsemaní Neighborhood
Getsemaní is a neighborhood that has gained significant relevance in recent years
due to its artistic and cultural atmosphere. This old working-class neighborhood,
which was the scene of important struggles for independence, today combines
history with contemporary expressions such as urban art, live music, and local
gastronomy. Walking through Getsemaní means encountering colorful murals,
charming cafes, and lively squares (City Hall of Cartagena, 2023).
Costs and accessibility of tourism.
Cartagena offers tourist options for different budgets. Flights from major cities in
Colombia such as Bogotá or Medellín are usually economical if purchased in
advance. In terms of accommodation, there are options ranging from luxury hotels
in Bocagrande to affordable hostels in the historic center. Food costs vary according
to the type of restaurant, but it is also possible to enjoy typical meals at accessible
prices in local squares and markets. The public transport system Transcaribe
facilitates mobility within the city, although many tourists choose to walk or use taxi
services or mobile apps (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, 2023).
Typical gastronomy.
The gastronomy of Cartagena is a fusion of African, indigenous, and Spanish flavors.
Dishes like coconut rice, fried fish with patacones, egg arepas, and fish sancocho
are essential parts of the local culinary offerings. During festivities like Holy Week,
the Sweet Festival is celebrated, where traditional preparations made from tropical
fruits and milk can be tasted, such as papaya candy, enyucado, and caballito
(Mayor's Office of Cartagena, 2023).
