COGNADOS Y REFERENTES
COGNADOS
➢Los cognados son palabras de origen latino o griego con significado igual en
español y presentan ortografía similar o igual ( sin embargo, la pronunciación es
diferente).
➢Es importante reconocer los cognados a simple vista en un texto porque facilitan la
comprensión en una lectura.
➢Por ejemplo: idea (Tiene el mismo significado tanto en inglés como en español
cuando se lee a primera vista.
Ejemplos cognados verdaderos
When reading, the decoding process involves the
capacity of recognizing the structures as well as the
knowledge of vocabulary. The vocabulary involves also
the capacity of recognizing the different types of words,
classification and usage according to the text context.
Cognates, especially true cognates, do not present a
difficulty when understanding them. On the other
hand, false cognates present difficulties to readers
when they are not conscious of them

Claves para diferenciar cognados verdaderos de falsos
1. Usen el contexto: El contexto es fundamental como clave para
comprender una lectura. Si el significado de la palabra no tiene
sentido en el contexto, podría ser un falso cognado.
2. Familiarícense con la lista de los cognados falsos que solo
representan el 10% mientras que los verdaderos son el 90%.
3. Reconozcan la raíz de la palabra a simple vista como clave
para descifrar cognados verdaderos.

3.Determine whether each cognate is a true cognate (same meaning in both languages) or a false cognate (looks similar but has a different meaning).
4.Write your answers in two separate lists: True Cognates and False Cognates.
Paragraph:
Sophia is an intelligent and sensitive student who always completes her assignments with great dedication. She recently attended an exclusive conference
about environmental issues, and the information was very important for her research. The event took place in a luxurious hotel, and she was surprised by the
delicious food served during the breaks. Although she was initially embarrassed to ask questions, the professor encouraged her to assist in the discussion.
The topic was extremely interesting, and she was excited to share the details with her classmates. In the future, she hopes to work for a large international
fabric that focuses on sustainability and innovation. She believes that eventually, she will have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change in society.
Challenge Questions:

En español, "embarazada" significa "pregnant" en inglés, lo que generaría una
confusión total si se traduce incorrectamente.
Contexto: La oración habla de hacer preguntas en una conferencia, lo que indica
que Sophia sentía vergüenza, no que estuviera embarazada
Assist → Ayudar
(No "asistir")
"The professor encouraged her to assist in the discussion.”
"Assist" en inglés significa "ayudar" o "colaborar", no "asistir" en el sentido de estar
presente.
Si quisiéramos decir que Sophia estuvo en la discusión, la palabra correcta en inglés
sería "attend".
Contexto: La profesora la anima a participar activamente, no solo a estar presente.
Por eso, el significado correcto de "assist" aquí es "ayudar" o "colaborar".

➢Los Referentes en inglés son las palabras o set de
palabras que nos guían en la lectura para conocer de
qué o quién se habla
➢Su uso es común, ya que tienen como fin el de no
repetir la misma palabra una y otra vez, sino que se
usan para referirse a algo/alguien mencionado con
anterioridad. Por tanto, todo referente tiene un
antecedente

EJEMPLO

Objective:

3.Identify the noun each pronoun refers to (its antecedent).
4.Write down each pronoun and its corresponding antecedent.
Paragraph:
James loves playing soccer. He practices every afternoon with his teammates. They always encourage him to
improve his skills. Last Saturday, the team won an important match, and it made them very happy. Coach Miller
congratulated the players and told them that their hard work had paid off.
