Read the text. Underline difficult words and then check their meanings. Life in an island community Off the west coast of Scotland, there are many small island communities. Life in these communities is very different from life in the big cities. People from the cities often say that life in the islands is slow and boring. But the island people tell a different story. Many families live by fishing or farming, and people usually have more than one job. Many families have rooms for tourists who come to visit the islands in summer. The tourists go walking and fishing and play sports. Sometimes they study Gaelic, the local language. And they stay in a 'bed and breakfast' with a local family or in one of the small island hotels. In the long summer evenings, people meet and talk together. They tell stories of where they live and what they do. The children on the islands go to small local schools. They have their classes in English and Gaelic. Sometimes there are only eight or ten children in one school! When they are twelve, they go to secondary school in a bigger town on the island. When they finish that school, they decide whether to go to university in a big city, or to stay and work on the island. 2. Read the texts. What is unusual about the schools? Small is beautiful? 1- Scoraig, a small region in the North of Scotland, needs a new teacher for its primary school. It’s a very beautiful place, but nobody wants to work there. It`s a real problem for the local council! So why can’t they find a teacher? Well, perhaps one reason is the isolated location. You can’t drive to Scoraig; you have to walk along a narrow, four-kilometre path next to the sea or take a boat. The region does not have a shop or a post office, and every home has to find its own supply of water and electricity. The school itself is small- very small. In fact, only five children go there! But those five children need a teacher, so the council hopes to find one soon. 2- Rum and Canna are two very small islands near the west coast of Scotland. Rum has about 40 inhabitants and Canna only has twelve. Each island has a small primary school and the same head teacher is in charge of both schools. At the moment, the head teacher does not have a difficult job because the schools have no students! So why do the islands need a head teacher for their schools? According to the local council, the answer is simple: “Things can change. We need schools for tomorrow’s children.” So for now, the head teacher’s job is safe. 3- Budaixi Primary School is in an isolated region of central China. It is difficult to find jobs here, so a lot of families leave the region and move to big cities. Because of this, the schools in the region are often very small. Budaixi Primary School only has one student. Her name is Xianzi and she is six years old. Her teacher, Mr Guo, teaches her maths and Chinese. Because Xianzi is the only child at school, she can’t play games with other children at lunchtime- so Mr Guo plays with her. They enjoy table tennis and basketball. Then it is time for lessons again. And of course, Xianzi is always top of the class! 2. Match the sentences (a-g) with the texts (1-3). Write 1, 2 or 3 next to each sentence. What kind of food do you think you can find in the countryside in your country? Do you like eating that kind of food? Do you usually eat that? 5. Now, read the following text about vegans and fruitarians. Food for thought? Vegans Vegans are vegetarians: they don’t eat fish or meat. However, most vegetarians eat eggs, cheese and other dairy products, but vegans don’t. In fact, they don’t eat any food from animals- eggs and honey, for example. Why do people become vegans? Usually, they believe that it’s wrong to kill animals for food or keep them for milk, eggs, and other products. They also believe that keeping animals is bad for the environment because it needs a lot of space. A small farm with animals can produce food for 20 people; but use the same land for vegetables and it can feed 240 people. Farm animals are also bad for the environment because they need a lot of water. Fruitarians Fruitarians are vegans: they don’t eat meat, fish or any other animal products. But there are other rules too. Fruitarians don’t cook their food and they don’t eat any vegetables, rice, bread or processed food. So what can they eat? Well, nuts and seeds are OK. They can eat sweet fruit like bananas and apples, and also olives, peppers and tomatoes because these are fruit too. Some people are fruitarians because they believe it is healthy. However, most doctors believe that fruitarians do not have a balanced diet. The human body needs some vitamins which aren’t in fruit or nuts. 6. Read the text again and answer the questions. a. Why don’t vegans eat eggs or honey? b. What do vegans think about killing animals for food? c. Which need a lot of water: vegetables or farm animals? d. Can a fruitarian eat sandwiches?
