This Special Instruction provides information for the procedure for communicating and flashing
electronic control module with control harness assembly for the machines listed above.
Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication until you understand the information
that is contained in this document.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this Special Instruction

skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard
warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar
cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all
inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not
recommended by Caterpillar is safe.
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read
and understood the instructions and warnings in the relevant
Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service
literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings
could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.
Note: 167-9225 Harness, 217-0114 Adapter Cable As, and 328-2292 Harness NEED NOT be used
to flash or troubleshoot on products as harness may damage the internal circuitry. These harnesses
should be ONLY used to service Cat® Electronic Control Modules (ECMs). For questions, contact
the Dealer Service Tools Hotline at 1-800-542-8665 (US) or 1-309-675-6277 (worldwide).
328-2292 Harness replaces the former 217-0114 Adapter Cable As and 167-9225 Harness.

assemblies for 10R-5644 Electronic Control Module and 10R-5641 Electronic Control Module. Refer
to Table 2 and Table 3.

Communication Visual Aid
1. Plug the two 70-pin harness connectors to the unit.
2. Plug the 9-pin harness connector to the Communication Adapter.
3. Connect the black harness clip on 217-0113 Wiring Harness to "-VBATT".
4. Connect the red harness clip on 217-0113 Wiring Harness to "+VBATT".

5. Start communication through the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) application. Refer to
Illustration 4.

6. Once the ECM is detected, go to "Utilities" (3) and then select "WinFlash" (4). Refer to
Illustration 5.

7. When the ECM is linked (shown in Illustration 4), a screen will display the ECM information and
an option to load the product flash file. Flashing needs be done ONLY using Cat® Data Link
(CDL) or "J1939" protocols (5). Refer to Illustration 6.
8. Click load product flash file (6) and the flash file selection dialog box will appear.

9. Navigate to the location where the flash file is stored, select the file, and click "Open". Refer to
Illustration 7.
10. Verify that the information displayed under file values (7) matches the application. If the file
values do not match, make sure that the correct flash file was selected.
11. Click begin flash.
12. Cat ET will indicate when flash programming has successfully completed.
