The United States celebrated Halloween in the 1840s, although it is based on the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain. American colonists are credited with bringing Halloween to the United States for the first time. The majority of colonists were English Puritans who celebrated the Samhain festival (Pagan festival) before embarking on their journey to the New World. Halloween in Canada Halloween customs, such as wearing disguises to ward off ghosts and offering food to appease malevolent spirits, were brought to Canada in the mid-to-late 1800s by Irish and Scottish immigrants. North America’s first recorded instance of dressing in disguise on Halloween was in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1898, while the first recorded use of the term trick or treat was in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1927. The Catholic Church turned November 1st, the original date of Samhain, into a religious holiday called “All Saint’s Day” or “All Hallows”, making October 31st the date of “All Hallow’s Eve” or what we now refer to as Halloween. In the New World, All Hallow’s Eve became a time for “play parties”, which were private parties thrown to celebrate the harvest. Many dressed in costume and told scary stories. These first Halloween parties helped shape the history of Halloween into the celebrations we have today! American colonists are responsible for initially bringing Halloween to the United States. How is Halloween celebrated in the United States? Every October 31st, people all over the United States celebrate Halloween. Children and adults dress in costumes and attend parties, visit haunted houses, and eat Halloween .People still celebrate by wearing scary costumes. However, today they also dress up like popular celebrities, children’s show characters, princesses, super heroes and much more. After dressing up, kids go trick-or-treating. They go from house to house in their neighborhoods and ask for treats such as candies and snacks by saying, “Trick or treat!” According to tradition, if no treat is given, they can play a trick on the homeowners. The traditional scary and modern fun sides of Halloween are seen today as the Jack-o’-lanterns that people create by carving scary faces on pumpkins. Homeowners place Jack-o’-lanterns in front of their houses to scare evil spirits and to welcome trick-or-treaters. Other modern fun activities that reflect the traditional past of Halloween include watching horror movies and visiting haunted houses. What is the purpose of Halloween in North America? Halloween is celebrated in the United States on October 31. The name “Halloween” comes from “All Hallows Eve,” or the day before All Saints Day, a traditional holy day for Christians. Halloween originated in Europe but during the 19th century immigrants brought it to North America, where it spread in popularity and evolved in many ways. According to tradition, the spirits of the dead were able to come back to life to harm people and crops in the physical world. People tried to appease the restless spirits on Halloween, and these practices led to many of today's Halloween traditions. For example, people used to wear costumes of monsters, ghosts, and devils to scare away the harmful spirits. Trick-or-treating Trick-or-treating is a traditional Halloween custom for children and adults in some countries. During the evening of Halloween, on October 31, people in costumes travel from house to house, asking for treats with the phrase "trick or treat". The "treat" is some form of confectionery, usually candy/sweets, although in some cultures money is given instead. The "trick" refers to a threat, usually idle, to perform mischief on the resident(s) or their property if no treat is given. Some people signal that they are willing to hand out treats by putting up Halloween decorations outside their doors; houses may also leave their porch lights on as a universal indicator that they have candy; some simply leave treats available on their porches for the children to take freely, on the honor system. "Trick or treat" or "Trick or treat! This is another of the best-known Halloween customs, even in Spain it has had a deep impact among the population. Children knock on doors mentioning the phrase "trick or treat" to receive candy and sweets. If they don't receive the prize, they have a prank planned for not accepting the deal. Dress up during Halloween night During the Halloween party, many people take the opportunity to dress up, especially children; of horrifying and terrifying characters. Why dress up at the Halloween party? This comes from the origin of Halloween. According to Celtic tradition, as it was believed that ghosts wandered among the living, the population disguised themselves to go unnoticed. Halloween in Canada vs. US The Halloween festivities in Canada are not much different from Halloween in the US. Our Halloween celebrations are similar, with dressing up in costumes, carving pumpkins, trick or treating, and attending Halloween parties. You may notice some minor differences in costumes, as we tend to dress up as hockey players more often than Americans. But otherwise, there’s little difference.
