Social Media...
WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?
Social media can be defined as
websites and applications that enable
users to create and share content or to
participate in social networking.
Now that we know what it is, let's talk
about its positive and negative effects.
Positive Effects
THESE ARE SOME OF THE POSTIVE
EFFECTS SOCIAL MEDIA HAS.
Overcoming barriers.
Social media can be used to overcome barriers of
distance and time, allowing its users to connect and
communicate with people all over the world.
Entertainment.
Social media is a good source of entertainment,
whether it be videos, games, movies and many
more forms of entertainment.
Negative Effects
THESE ARE SOME OF THE
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL
MEDIA.
Promotion of negative
thoughts/habits.
Studies have found an increased risk for depression,
anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal
thoughts linked to the heavy use of social media.
Cyberbullying.
About 10 percent of teens report being bullied on
social media and many other users are subjected to
offensive comments. Social media platforms such
as Twitter can be hotspots for spreading hurtful
rumors, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting
emotional scars.
Inadequacy about your life or
appearance.
With social media, your self perception may be
warped due to exposure of certain ideas o images.
Some other negative effects
FOMO (fear of missing out)
Depression and Anxiety
Sites such as Facebook and Instagram seem to
exacerbate feelings that others are having more
fun or living better lives than you are.
Human beings need face-to-face contact to be
mentally healthy.
Isolation
Self Absortion
A study at the University of Pennsylvania found
that high usage of Facebook, Snapchat, and
Instagram increases rather decreases feelings of
loneliness.
Sharing endless selfies and all your innermost
thoughts on social media can create an unhealthy
self-centeredness and distance you from real-life
connections.
Conclusions
Social media has both positive
and negative effects on its users,
but since it has an overwhelming
amount of negative effects, its
usage must be regulated.
