NACE INTERNATIONAL BOOK OF STANDARDS
Volume 1
NACE International issues three classes of standards: recommended practices (RP), test methods (TM), and
material requirements (MR). The alphanumeric designations for NACE International standards indicate the class of
standard, the number of the standard in its class for the year of publication, and the year of publication. The number
immediately following the hyphen reflects the year of the most recent revision or reaffirmation of that particular
standard. For example, RP0170-2004 is the designation for the 2004 version of the first recommended practice
issued in 1970. RP0472-2000 indicates the 2000 version of the fourth recommended practice issued in 1972. A
reference appearing on the cover page of the published standard will explain that this standard was reaffirmed in
2000 and the cover page will continue to detail the full approval history of the document. Existing standards will be
modified accordingly as they are revised or reaffirmed.
NACE International standards are in two volumes: Recommended Practices are in Volume 1; Test Methods and
Material Requirements are in Volume 2. A description of the general nature of each type of NACE International
standard is provided at the end of this table of contents. A listing of all NACE International standard recommended
practices follows.

HOW TO FIND A
STANDARD IN THIS
BOOK
Recommended Practices
If you were looking for RP0475-98,
(1) Go to the RP (Recommended Practices) section.
--```,,`````,,``,``,`,,`,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---
(2) Scan the headings of the pages and look for RPXX75-XX⎯these are standards that were originally
published in 1975. All of the 1975 RPs are next to each other.
(3) When you locate the RPs published in 1975, look for RP0475-98, which will be between RP0375 and
RP0575.
*NOTE: NACE/SSPC standards are found at the beginning of the RP section.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF NACE STANDARDS
•
Recommended practices include recommended methods of selection, design, installation, maintenance, or operation of material or
system where corrosion is a factor. In addition, some recommended practices focus on details of construction of a corrosion control
system; methods of treating the surface of materials to reduce corrosion; requirements for using devices to reduce corrosion; and
procedures for increasing the effectiveness, safety, and economic benefits of an installation or system.
•
Test methods are tests related to corrosion prevention and control. This type of standard can give the method of conducting tests to
ascertain the characteristics of a material, design, or operation.
•
Material requirements state the necessary characteristics of a material where corrosion is a factor in the selection, application, and
maintenance of the material.
