For each part of the test, there will be time for you to look through the questions and time for you to check your answers. Look at the instruction to Part 1. There are seven questions in this part. For each question, there are three pictures and a short recording. Choose the correct picture and put a tick in the box below it. Before we start, here is an example: 4. Where will Janet’s mum pick her up? Janet: Mother: No, Janet. I’m not coming that way. Please walk down Jackson Street and wait on the corner of Jackson and Adams Street. Janet: Yes, please … I’m going to visit my grandma in hospital and I’d like to get her a present. Wendy: Do you have enough drinks and sandwiches? Man: I’m not sure what she likes to read. Salesman: In that case, why don’t you buy her some flowers? Oh, that’s a good idea! Man: 6. What time is the man’s flight? Woman: Are you also flying to Paris? Man: 1. Who was the man sitting behind? Man: Yes, but I had a difficult time seeing it. There was a very tall man in front of me and he kept leaning over to talk to his girlfriend. Now listen again. Now listen again. Woman: Please pass me the newspaper. Man: Where is it? On the dining room table? Woman: No, it’s right there next to the armchair. I fell asleep reading it! 2. Which handbag does the girl ask for? I’d like to see the handbag in the window, please. Salesperson: Which one are you interested in? The bag with the white stripes? No. There’s a big bag with a long strap. Girl: No. I’m taking a later flight. It leaves at quarter to four. 7. Where is the newspaper? Woman: Why? Girl: Yes, I am. Woman: Does your plane leave at ten past two? Woman: Did you enjoy the film? Man: That would be lovely. Thanks. Now listen again. Mary bought flowers. The first picture is correct, so there is a tick in box A. Now we are ready to start. Man: Yes, we do. But perhaps you would like to bake a cake or buy one, Wendy? Wendy: Oh, I can’t bake, but I’d be happy to go to the bakery. No. Salesman: A book? Girl: Where the library is? Mother: That’s right. See you later. Salesman: What about some chocolates? Girl: I’ll wait for you on the corner near the school, Mum. 5. What will Wendy bring to the party? Salesman: Can I help you? Girl: LISTENING Now listen again. What did Mary buy? Girl: Scripts Salesperson: Oh, yes. Next to the pair of sandals. Now listen again. 3. What does the woman order? Waiter: Good morning, sir. What can I get you? Man: I’d like a glass of iced coffee and a piece of cake, please. Waiter: And you, madam? Woman: The same. Actually, I’ll have a sandwich instead of the cake. Now listen again. Now listen again. That is the end of Part 1. Now turn to Part 2, questions 8 to 13. You will hear people talking in six different situations. For each question, choose the correct answer. 8. Luke: Brenda, come and look at these jeans! Brenda: Ha! They look like something out of the 1970s, with wide bottoms. Do you think anyone will buy them? Luke: Well, if the shop sold them in the men’s section, I’d wear them. The ridiculous jeans everyone wears today are too tight. Brenda: You mean ‘skinny jeans’. I think they’re great. I wonder why people weren’t wearing them in the 1970s. Luke: Brenda, it was a totally different style back then. Anyway, I’m sure that people in 50 years will think our clothes look ridiculous, too. Now listen again. Advanced Think Ahead 3 Photocopiable © Burlington Books 2 B1 Preliminary Practice Exam (PET) 9. Leanne: I think that ghost tour we took around Manchester was probably the highlight of the trip. Tony: Definitely. I’m glad we took it with Annabel. She knew so much about the history of the city. Leanne: Yes, I thought so too, but she seemed a bit worried at first. I think we were the first tourists who took her tour. Tony: Really? She seemed very calm to me, though it was funny when she got lost. I think she got a little confused. Leanne: I know. She didn’t want us to notice. Anyway, she quickly found the route again. 12. Andy: Scripts Connor, do you still read Danny Carlton’s blog – the one on the school website? Connor: No, I stopped following it a few weeks ago. It was becoming hard to read with all the links, photos and colours he added. Andy: Really? There was a funny post about a maths lesson yesterday. If you’d read it, you would’ve laughed. Connor: I probably would have – Danny’s blog posts are amusing, although we often don’t have the same opinion about things. Andy: Then, if you start following the blog again, you should write Danny your comments, because he always replies. Now listen again. Now listen again. 10. Shawn: 13. Brian: Do you want to take part in the school play this year, Stephanie? Stephanie: No, I’m a terrible actress. Last year, I got the highly important role of the lead tree. Shawn: Well, I’m definitely going to audition. Stephanie: Really? I didn’t know you could act. Shawn: Exactly, that’s the thing – nobody thinks I’m talented because I’m shy, and they’ve never given me a speaking role. I’m determined to change that! Stephanie: Oh, but do you know what play they’re doing? Shawn: Sure. My friend Francis wrote it. It’s about a fantasy world in the past. It’s really good. 11. Katya: You didn’t join me for our morning run, Ben. Is everything OK? Yes, Katya. My back’s been hurting recently, so I stayed at home. Katya: But the marathon is next month. Have you seen a doctor? Ben: Yes, I went to a back specialist yesterday. She advised me to let my muscles recover. Katya: If I were you, I’d search for a good pair of running shoes. The ones you use now look awful. Meanwhile, have you got anything for the pain? Ben: Yes, the doctor gave me some tablets, but hopefully a day in bed will help. Now listen again. Advanced Think Ahead 3 Photocopiable © Sorry I had to catch the train right after the film last night. What did you think of it? Annabel: It wasn’t wonderful. For a start, I didn’t understand what the director was trying to say with the soundtrack. It didn’t seem suitable to me. Brian: Well, I liked the music and I thought the action scenes were great, although I’d hoped the special effects would be more realistic. There was something strange about the explosions. You could see they weren’t real. Annabel: Really? I thought they were really impressive, but the costumes were very ordinary. Now listen again. Now listen again. Ben: LISTENING That is the end of Part 2. Now turn to Part 3, questions 14 to 19. You will hear a hotel manager talking about a conference and the hotel’s facilities. Now listen again. That is the end of Part 3. Now turn to Part 4, questions 20 to 25. You will hear an interview with a man called Alan Harris talking about Thailand and the Thai people. For each question, put a tick in the correct box. You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions for Part 4. Scripts LISTENING Alan: The people of Thailand are very warm and friendly. They love having guests in their country and they are very polite – but sometimes they ask personal questions, which can be embarrassing. Just remember that they aren’t being rude. They are simply curious about the many people who visit their country. Host: Oh. I’m curious, too. I’d like to know more about Thai culture. Alan: The culture and traditions of Thailand are different from ours and you need to know a little about the people in order to know how to behave. Here are a few tips from my blog that may be useful when you visit Thailand. Tip number 1: The Thais think it’s very bad manners to show anger or talk loudly. So try not to shout and keep calm. Host: That makes sense. Alan: Tip number 2: If you eat with Thai people, remember to have a spoon of rice at the beginning of the meal. This will show that you understand how important rice is in Thailand. Tip number 3: The head is the most important part of the body. Never touch a Thai person on the head. Host: How interesting! Thank you, Alan. This has been ... Now listen again. That is the end of Part 4. Now we are ready to start. Host: Good evening. This evening, I’ll be interviewing Alan Harris, who is here to tell us about Thailand. Alan: Yes, Thailand is a country I have visited many times and each time I’m there, I discover new and exciting places. If you are planning a holiday in Thailand, believe me, you won’t be sorry. Thailand is a beautiful and popular holiday destination in Asia today. The country has fantastic geographical features: mountains, rainforests and jungles. There are also many exotic islands if you like the sea and the beach. The food is delicious and the shopping is fantastic, too. Host: Tell us, Alan, what’s the best time to visit Thailand? Alan: Well, that’s difficult to answer. Many people like to visit Thailand during the winter because the weather is dry and cool. The hottest time is during the spring – May and June – and it’s difficult to go on tours or do a lot of sightseeing then. The rainy season is from around June to November. But the rain shouldn’t stop you from visiting Thailand as it’s very beautiful during the summer and autumn. It’s also less crowded because fewer people visit during the rainy season. Personally, it’s my favourite time of the year. Host: And what are the Thai people like? How would you describe them? Advanced Think Ahead 3 Photocopiable © Burlington Books 4
