Oral Comprehension 1 13 Page 3 Guide: Hello and welcome aboard our annual trip to Eynhallow Island. As you all know, we are just off the coast of Scotland. We are heading towards a small, mysterious island – a place where time has stood still and people no longer live. Some people think the island is haunted. We organise this special boat trip only once a year, during the summer, because the high tides make it impossible for boats to get to the island most of the year. In case you’re wondering where the name Eynhallow comes from, it means the Holy Island in the Old Norse language. Yet no one knows for certain why it is holy. On the island, you’ll be able to see the ruins of a church dating from the 12th century. It was probably a monastery at a time when Eynhallow had been the spiritual centre of the area. We’re also going to see ruins from medieval times and even from the Stone Age. These are walls that archeologists found after Eynhallow was evacuated in 1851. Before the evacuation, there had been four families living on the island – 24 people in total. But then a disease spread, killing them one by one. Finally, the survivors left the island, but not before they removed the roofs of the houses – in order to make sure no one could live on the island and become ill. In the more distant past, Eynhallow had been the summer home of the Finfolk – that is according to legend – and there are some exciting stories about the Finfolk. Who were they? They were half human and half fish – that would explain the word ‘fin’ in their name. We’re almost there. Make sure you look all around you – to the land, sea and sky. You might not see any Finfolk today, but you’ll definitely see many beautiful seabirds. 1 2 1. a 2. a 3. b 1.
