Laura, your jeans look really cool. Are they new?
No. Actually, they’re second-hand. They used to belong to my friend Shelly. We were at a swap party together the
day after my birthday.
A swap party – what’s that?
Each guest brings several items of clothing that they don’t wear any more but which are in good condition, and
everyone browses and takes a few items that they like.
A win-win situation. One person’s rubbish ...
... is another person’s treasure! Yep! My friend Rita is planning another swap party in two weeks. Do you want to
come?
Definitely. So have you stopped buying new clothes altogether?
No, but I watch what I spend more carefully now. I have a list when I go out shopping and I only pay with cash.
I don’t buy online. I’ve removed all the shopping apps from my phone.
Have you saved lots of money since you stopped shopping online?
Yes, but I’m not doing it only for the money. It’s also to protect the environment. The fashion industry is one of the
worst polluters in the world, especially big clothing companies. Chemicals and colours that are used in the textiles
often get into our rivers, polluting them. And Michelle, did you know that enormous quantities of water are used to
make textiles – to grow cotton, for example?
Yes, I did. You’re also helping to stop child labour. Unfortunately, many of the clothes that we wear are made by
children working in very poor conditions in countries like India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
Exactly. I’ve started shopping in an environmentally friendly local designer’s shop. I found a beautiful dress for my
sister’s wedding there. It’s a pity it’s so elegant. Now it’s just lying in my cupboard.
Bring it to the swap party in two weeks. I need a dress for my cousin’s wedding in a month.
