Choose the correct answer to complete the text. (8 points)
In November 2015, Kazakhstan’s wildlife experienced a terrible disaster. Almost 200,000 antelopes suddenly
1.
died / have died / dying. It would have shocked scientists more if something like this 2. hadn’t happened /
didn’t happen / doesn’t happen before. But, in fact, in 1998, a similar phenomenon occurred. In order to
find out what had killed the antelopes, scientists took some bodies to their laboratories. In 1998, this wasn’t
possible, because researchers 3. didn’t have to / couldn’t / mustn’t reach the antelopes’ remote habitat.
Fortunately, in 2016, they 4. were able to / needed to / will be able to find the answer.
They found a bacteria in the antelopes’ blood called pasteurella multocida. Usually, if this type of bacteria is
in antelopes’ bodies, it 5. wouldn’t / hadn’t / doesn’t hurt them. This is because it lives naturally around their
noses. So what happened? Kazakhstan had some unusually warm weather during those years. According to
scientists, high temperatures 6. should / must / may cause bacteria to spread. In this case, they think the
bacteria travelled through the antelopes’ bodies into their blood.
In the near future, researchers 7. will be searching / search / are searching for ways to prevent this from
happening again. But, if this disaster 8. will happen / happened / happens again, this species will probably
become extinct.
