Oral Comprehension 1 08 Page 3 Presenter: Welcome to the half-hour health podcast. Today, we’ll be talking about milk. Let’s start with some facts. A glass of 2 per cent fat cow’s milk contains about 8 grams of protein and 300 grams of calcium. Vitamin D is also added to milk to help people with bone diseases. So why did people spend over £7 billion in the UK on alternative types of milk in 2017? We’ll be talking to two ordinary people to find out what types of milk they drink. Let’s start with you, Sharon. Sharon: I’ve got some awful allergies, and I’ve only drunk milk from a cow twice in my life. The first time, I suffered from breathing problems and my mum had to take me to hospital. I was a baby then. After that, I was given soya milk. I tried milk again last year because I thought my allergy had disappeared. This time I got an upset stomach and I was sick. According to research, soya milk is nearly as healthy as cow’s milk. It contains almost as much calcium and vitamin D as milk from a cow. The only disadvantage is that sugar is often added to improve the taste. Presenter: Thanks, Sharon. What about you, Pete? Pete: You may imagine cows eating grass peacefully in open spaces, but this isn’t true. On most farms, cows are kept in terrible conditions. I used to drink rice milk. It’s tasty, but it hardly contains any protein and it’s also really high in carbohydrates. Recently, I’ve started drinking pea milk. Pea milk is the most environmentally efficient type of milk production because many peas can be grown in a small space. Today, peas are often found on urban farms. So, if you change to this type of milk, you’ll actually help the planet. Presenter: Thanks, Pete, I’d never heard of pea milk before, and now I’m curious to try it. Let’s move on now to coconut milk … 1 1. 300 grams 2. £7 billion 3. an upset stomach 2 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 4. carbohydrates 5. pea milk breathing problems Sugar is often added to it. cows It hardly contains any protein. / It’s high in carbohydrates. pea milk Oral Production Accept all logical and grammatically correct answers.
