Adam: Hello, and welcome to City Life Podcast. Today I’m talking to farmer Alice Mendoza about urban farming. Hello, Alice.
What is urban farming?
Alice: Hi, Adam. Urban farming is growing food in or near a village, town or city. Some urban farms are businesses, but
others are community projects and people can grow their own food on them. Urban farms have usually got a variety of
fruit and vegetables – sometimes even exotic fruit and vegetables. On many urban farms, you’ll also find animals –
chickens, goats, cows …
Adam: Is urban farming a new idea?
Alice: Actually, no. Urban farms have existed since ancient times, but the practice has been growing in recent years.
Adam: I see. So what are the advantages of community urban farming projects?
Alice: There are many advantages. First of all, it’s cheap. If you grow your own food, you don’t usually spend so much money
on it. It’s also good for your health. If you work hard to produce vegetables, you’ll probably eat more vegetables, too.
Working on an urban farm is also great exercise. It can really improve your health and even help you recover from
illnesses. There’s also a social advantage, because you meet and work with people from your residential area. And
urban farming is good for the environment, too. Before urban farms, if you had bought vegetables in the city, they would
have arrived from distant places – probably in large lorries, sitting in traffic jams on motorways and polluting the air.
Adam: That’s an interesting point. So where are most community urban farms located?
Alice: You can find farms in gardens, on the roofs of buildings in cities and even in schools. I use a school urban farm to
teach children how to plant vegetables and how to look after them. Some children had never eaten vegetables before,
but now they love them!
Adam: What do you think will happen with urban farming in the future?
Alice: I think it will get bigger and better. According to the mayor of Goodrich, for example, the city is going to provide more
open spaces for farming. Hopefully, within the next ten years, half of its food will be grown close to home.
Adam: That sounds like a wonderful plan. Thank you, Alice.
