Sophie: That’s the idea! They’re for competitive swimming. My old goggles filled up with water all the time. Ryan: I usually take the water out of my goggles whenever I reach the end of the pool – which is every 25 metres. Irritating. Sophie: Exactly. I hate doing that. It slows me down, and anyway, I’m searching for a 50-metre pool, like in the Olympics. Ryan: There’s one on the other side of town, but I’ve heard it’s expensive to join. Sophie: I’ve started training every day now, so it’ll be worth the money. 2 Harvey: Simone, what’s your opinion of Grant … as a director? Simone: It’s difficult to work with him, isn’t it? I mean, he spends all his time in the theatre working hard to make sure everything is perfect, but – Harvey: He’s simply not up to date, not modern enough with the way he does things. Simone: Exactly. He doesn’t like to get ideas from younger directors, to see what’s ‘out there’. Harvey: Do you think we can talk to him about it? Simone: I don’t know … we can try – maybe he’ll listen to us. 3 Louise: Has Susan arrived at the campsite yet? She’s got the tent, so if she doesn’t get there, we won’t have anywhere to sleep. Marcus: Sorry, I forgot to tell you. She sent me a text message about the tent half an hour ago. She’s already put it up. Louise: Great, now all we need to do is follow the signposts to the campsite. But look! We’ve reached the end of the forest. Where is it? Marcus: I don’t know. Did we take the wrong trail? Louise: You’re the one with the map. I hope we get there before it gets completely dark. 4 Philip: Jenny: Philip: Jenny: Philip: Jenny: My English teacher has asked me to write a short story for the school newspaper. She’s finally noticing your talents! But I can’t think of anything to write. My dad advised me to listen to classical music. He thinks it’ll give me inspiration – but it only gave me a headache! I usually find that when I spend time reading various literature styles, I feel full of ideas and energy. You should definitely try that. I usually just spend an hour or two planning my story. Try what I said before you plan next time. See if it helps. C I was beaten in my tennis match yesterday. It’s a good thing you didn’t come to watch. Oh, I’m sorry Denise. How do you feel? Honestly, I feel angry. With the referee? You mean the umpire? In tennis there isn’t a referee, but an umpire. No, I wasn’t angry with him – he seemed professional, but the grass was wet and there were holes all over the court. I don’t know about my opponent, but it definitely affected my playing. It seems there’s always a problem at that club. Absolutely! In the previous game, the net was too high! Hey, Martha. Here’s your crime novel. I’ve just finished it. Thanks for letting me borrow it. Did you like it? Yes and no. It was interesting how the murderers were captured only 20 years after committing the crime. I enjoyed the long discussions in court as well. They were very exciting and got me thinking. Yes, George is an excellent, intelligent lawyer. He speaks incredibly well. That’s what makes the book so interesting, but also hard to follow. I got a bit lost at times. I know what you mean. That’s why I read the book again. 2. B Speaking 3 4 3. B 4. C 5. A 6. A Page 4 Accept all logical and grammatically correct answers. Accept all logical and grammatically correct answers. Today, we’ll be speaking to John Peters, a school student. John has become an expert on dog nutrition. John, how did you become interested in dog nutrition? Last summer, I did a biology project about dogs. Actually, my teacher encouraged me to choose a more exotic animal, because everyone knows a lot about dogs, but I simply love dogs! Also, I had been volunteering at a shelter for homeless animals for a long time, and that ended suddenly. Why is that? Because my parents were worried about me. You see, they became scared of dogs after my brother was bitten on a family holiday. So that’s when I started dog-sitting instead. What responsibilities does that include? Caring for the dogs while their owners are away – feeding them, walking them. I especially like taking them to the forest near our neighbourhood, although I always have to clean their paws carefully afterwards. John, have you ever owned a dog yourself? We used to have a spaniel, but after she had died, my parents refused to get another pet. At first I was angry, but actually, if I didn’t spend time with different dogs, I wouldn’t learn so much about them. It’s an advantage. I understand you teach dog owners how to care for their pets. Well, I’ve started posting videos, but I’m not an expert. It’s important to see a dog nutritionist as soon as you get a dog; however, these experts can be too expensive for some people, so my videos can help. Do you have any contact with your viewers? I have hundreds of regular viewers, and I always respond to their comments. For example, I made a video last week about poisonous foods for dogs. Most dog owners know about theobromine – the chemical in chocolate. But I was surprised by some viewers’ comments. A few wrote about regularly giving their dogs chocolate cake. Several commented about this possibly being unhealthy, but not dangerous. I immediately made another video explaining that these foods might make your dog be sick! John, I’m afraid we’ve only got a minute till the commercial break. Please tell me, what’s the most important thing you’d like to tell our listeners? Uh … that many people don’t realise what an important role nutrition plays in a dog’s life – even on its mood. People often think: if a dog gets regular exercise, it’ll be cheerful. But that’s not enough. You must feed your dog properly, too. For example, if a dog eats too much protein, it can become anxious. Thank you, John, and now … 2. B Speaking 3 4 2 09 0 20 2 4. B 3. B 4. A Page 3 This is an announcement about our annual fashion show. We’ve had a fashion show at Brigdale High School every year for several years. This will be our seventh year in a row. This year, we’ll continue presenting beautiful and fashionable clothes made by professional designers, but the exciting news is that our models will also be wearing clothes which were created by our own students. This is thanks to our wonderful new design teacher, Mrs Broadshaw, who has been teaching our Year 10 students how to get ahead in the fashion world. Another addition to this year’s fashion show will be available on our school website. If you see an outfit or item you fancy in the show, you can find it on the website. Just click on the item of clothing or the accessory, and you can see where you can buy it, what sizes and colours are available, what material it’s made of – cotton, wool, leather – and, of course, the item’s price. And the best part is, everything you buy during the entire week of the fashion show will be sold at a reduced price. Finally, there is another change worth mentioning. Unlike in previous years, the show won’t take place in the school theatre. This time, the event is going to be held outdoors – in our beautiful garden. So, make sure you save the date in your calendars. It’s 14th June. Tickets will be sold in the art room on 13th and 14th June, but we recommend getting tickets online and booking seats much earlier. You can do that easily on the school website from 11th May. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you – in style! 2 1. seventh 2. professional designers 3. school website Speaking 3 4. reduced 5.
