hoping to combine my love of fashion with
travel. I’m thinking of visiting either Milan
or New York. Can anyone help?

Amy: I recommend looking for flights to Milan now. If you book
soon, it’ll be inexpensive. I suggest taking a trip to the
cathedral. Its gothic architecture is incredible. There’s also
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the oldest shopping centre
in Milan, dating back to 1877. It was named after the first
King of Italy, and it was designed and built by Giuseppe
Mengoni. Tragically, he died after falling from its roof.
Unfortunately, most of the shops only sell designer labels,
so I couldn’t afford to purchase anything. However, it was
worth visiting to admire the building. I regret not visiting
the Corso Buenos Aires because I fancied buying an
Italian leather jacket, and there are shops there with prices
that don’t make you faint! I thought that I would have time
to visit, but I didn’t.

If you’re interested in developing designs and creating
clothes, I suggest exploring the Garment District in
Manhattan. Some people have suggested officially
changing its name to the Fashion District in order to
attract more modern businesses. However, this area
isn’t only about fashionable outfits. Although you might
think it’s just an old urban area, it’s actually a historical
highlight of New York. It’s the place where the American
clothes industry began. In fact, as you approach 40th
Street from 39th, you can see a 2.4-metre monument to
Garment District workers. It’s a sculpture of a man using
a sewing machine to put a button on some clothing. My
sister said that on her trip, she had taken a tour around
some designer showrooms. These are places where
designers like Calvin Klein display their products before
they are sent to shops. She advised me to book a tour, but
I enjoyed looking at the different materials, like cotton and
wool, in the fabric shops on my own. She also mentioned
there were shops where you couldn’t try anything on or
get a refund, so be careful what you buy!
Sarah: I’d recommend going to fashion week. You can do that
in New York or Milan. Actually, the ‘Big Four’ fashion
weeks take place in London and Paris, too. I think New
York’s fashion week, which is generally the earliest, is in
September. When exactly will you be travelling? I’m sure
it’ll be exciting to see catwalk shows and go to talks and
other fashion events!
